DR. MARINA A. NJELEKELA
This is to inform the general public that the Muhimbili National Hospital Board of Trustees has appointed Dr. Marina Aloyce Njelekela as the Executive Director of the Hospital with immediate effect. Before her appointment, Dr. Njelekela was a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Physiology at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS).
Dr. Njelekela has worked with MUHAS since 2001 and prior to that, she had worked at Kisarawe District Hospital as a Medical Officer and at the Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI) as a Registrar until 1998 when she went for further studies in Japan.
Dr. Marina Njelekela holds a Doctor of Medicine Degree from the Univeristy of Dar es Salaam, and a PhD in Human and Environmental Studies from Kyoto University, Japan. Her area of specialization was Pathogenesis of Lifestyle Related Diseases in Developing countries.
As a team player, Dr. Marina Njelekela led the Medical Women Association of Tanzania (MEWATA) for six years. During her two terms as a MEWATA leader, she was in the forefront of health awareness among women and the general public, especially on Breast Cancer Awareness and Screening Campaigns that were conducted in Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Mbeya, Mtwara, Lindi, Dodoma, and Manyara.
She is also well known for her role in advocacy campaigns and has brought to light the real extent of the problem of breast and cervical cancers in Tanzania that led to significant improvement on the prevention and management of Cancers in the country.
Dr. Njelekela sits on various Boards, including the Aerial Glaser Paediatric AIDS Healthcare Initiatives (AGPAH) and Management Development for Health (MDH). She is a recipient of various awards in academia and social services, including the prestigious Martin Luther King Drum Major Award for Justice that was bestowed on her by the US Embassy in January 2010 for her efforts to improve women’s access to health care services.
