The Associate Dean for Academics at SICT and co-ordinator of the joint iLabs-UDSM project Dr Alfred Mwambela receives a cheque for 15,000 US dollars from IBM's Business Development Manager for Tanzania Mr David Sawe in Dar es salaam.

The University of Dar es Salaam has received a 15,000 US dollar (about 22.5m/-) award from IBM for to the School of Informatics and Communication Technologies (SICT). The money will be used to acquire new equipment and support postgraduate studies.

The award is in recognition of SICT's achievements and support for open collaborative research, which is highly valued by both the ICT industry and the education sector, according to IBM's Business Development Manager for Tanzania Mr David Sawe.

It is the second time the UDSM has received such funding from IBM. In 2009 the institution received some 6,000 US dollar Faculty Award to assist in developing an ICT Strategy.

The iLabs Project, which started in 2005, is a partnership among the USA's Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and three Universities in Africa. Along with UDSM are Makerere University in Kampala (Uganda) and Obafemi Awolowo University in Osun State (Nigeria).
