The sole agricultural bank in in the country, Tanzania Agricultural Development Bank (TADB) has paid a farewell to the Technical Adviser (Rural Finance) to Marketing Infrastructure, Value Addition and Rural Finance (MIVARF) Support Programme.

MIVARF is a project under the Prime Minister’s Office. The program aims to reduce rural poverty and accelerate economic growth on a sustainable basis. The Programme Development Objective is to enhance incomes and food security of the target group on a sustainable basis.

Speaking during the farewell meeting at TADB’s premises, the Acting Managing Director of the Bank, Mr. Francis Assenga said the Bank will remember Mr. Malik’s contribution toward establishment of Smallholder Credit Guarantee Scheme (SCGS) and Management of Rural Innovation Fund (RIF) under custodian of TADB.

“Your contribution toward establishment of Credit Guarantee Scheme and Rural Innovation Fund is remarkable, we will forever remember you for making these two prestigious projects under TADB to happen,” he said.

An Indian born, Mr. Malik has been in Tanzania since 15 February 2014 where he was assisting MIVARF to meet its twin objectives. Firstly, to collaborate with and support Bank of Tanzania, Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security & Cooperatives and the Networks, with a view to facilitating formulation of a suitable policy/institutional framework (including enactment of a legislation) for the orderly growth and regulation & supervision of rural finance sector in Tanzania, including the Micro Finance (MF) sector.

Secondly, to help a few partner institutions, (the Community/Cooperative Banks and MF Institutions (MFIs), to extend their outreach in rural areas, so as to bring five hundred thousand additional rural households under the ambit of the formal financial system by 2017.

According to the recently issued statement by African Development Bank MIVARF has successfully achieved its development objectives in increasing the percentage of all-year passable rural roads and decrease in the number of households located more than 10kms from passable roads; increased volume of goods moved within and out of the focal areas and access of farmers’ produce to markets; and increased price of farmers produce and districts’ revenue collection.
