AU’s Social & Economic Roadmap Under Qaddaffi….The rebuttal.

Interesting article from the duo: Mashaka and Dr. Shayo. Oftentimes when I/we see articles on this wonderful blog, I choose to remain silent because of the lack of knowledge or perspective on two things-first is the lack of knowledge on who and what kind of people visits and read this articles-cum-issues, and second is the lack of knowledge on the intention of the writer/s to the general public.
Is Mashaka writing these articles with a view on the future career in the government? Or is he really serious with what he writes as an educated person who knows that this blog is visited by many. If the aim is to seek prominence before the Tanzanian umma for political and career reasons, then I have no qualms, and I laud his endeavour. But if the aim is on educating the umma, then I beg to differ.

It is for this reason that I deem, by staying aloof from very sensitive and touching issues, mostly pertaining to Politics & World affairs is tantamount to letting a leprosy festering on the entire populace, especially when knowing for sure that something positive can be done…thankfully basing on facts or knowledge.

As a write this in response to the duo, I advance my apology anchored on modesty: that it’s not in my intention to dress down, to disparage or to belittle the writers, so for anything that will render the original article shortsighted, I‘m sorry.

The umma needs to be fed with rightful information and erudition, otherwise ignorance and myopia will remain. As I respond, several quotations will be drawn from the original article to emphasize the point on the choice of Muhammar Qaddafi as the chairman of the African Union until next year.
In fact, 1-year term is not enough for one to really execute his plans for a continent as big as Africa, especially when chaired by a man as visionary as Qaddafi; a man who has wept at the plight of Africans, clamours for African Unity, and has a visceral desire to see the unification of Africans.
To have a person with a pedigree of Qaddafi (of Arabic descent) who yearns for a Unification of a continent massively populated by Bantu Africans, is a blessing in disguise. He could have merely chosen to go with his northern brethren, the Arabic Berbers. But instead, he has embraced the whole continent. It is this visceral desire that I have also embraced for years of African Unity, and god-willing, this dream will one day come to fruition.

The unity is possible, if, and only if we as Africans can believe in ourselves. It is the lack of belief in ourselves as capable people, left behind as a legacy of colonization and subjugation of people on people that today we have some of us looking at the idea as a joke. If other parts of the world can, why not us [Africans]?

Some of the African leaders chafes at this idea of unity because the idea of unity to them means one thing: relinquishing power and positions, the apparent sources of their wealth, greed, and etc.

“The Country has been landlocked economically for decades due to his supposed involvement in terrorism.”

Response: The words “landlocked economically” are totally out of proportion; confusing to say the least. The economic definition of being landlocked is much more complex than the geographic explanation which defines the lack of maritime access for business and other activities. Countries are economically landlocked in the sense that their economic developments are constrained when several factors are present like remoteness from major or minor markets, poor infrastructure and border crossing difficulties, which imply high transportation costs. It is worth noting that most of these factors are also present in island developing(non-landlocked) countries and economies as well.

The right word to describe Libya’s past position is “Isolated economically.” not “landlocked economically.”

-Col. Muhammar Qadaffi has never been known to engage or involve himself into terrorism, but rather in support of terrorism, with an aim of countering the U.S. imperialism and its aggressive policies. So the right word here should be “Supporting.”

“It is quite disgusting, shameful and embarrassing to know that, African leaders brought a man of Qaddafi stature into its leadership.”

Response: It is actually disgusting to read a statement like this which belittles all those in the African Union Assembly who decided to vote for Qaddafi as their next leader, as if to say that they are mere nincompoops.

It is totally myopic to say that his [Qaddafi] policies have done nothing to develop his country. Over the years, Qaddafi has used vast amounts of his oil revenues to develop and beautify Libya. At the moment, Libya is quoted to be hosting an “eighth wonder of the world,” the largest ever underground network of aqueducts and pipes from the numerous wells in the Sahara desert, which supplies water to remote arid towns of Benghazi, Tripoli and others.
This wonderful undertaking has in fact been noted by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest and one of the miracles in the world.

In the early 1980s, Libya was one of the wealthiest countries in the world; its GNP per capita was higher than that of countries such as Greece, Italy, Malaysia, and Spain. Still today, high oil revenues and a small population of around 6.5 million people gives Libya one of the highest GDPs per person in Africa and have allowed the Libyan state to provide an extensive level of social security in a welfare system, particularly in the fields of housing and education.
Its infrastructure, largely benefiting from these oil revenues is growing rapidly and rivals many in the Western hemisphere.

It must be noted that most of these developments came during the “isolated” time when the Western world shunned Libya. Now that it has opened up to the international community, with their Multi National Corporations the likes of ExxonMobil and Shell, after denouncing terrorism and weapons of mass destruction, the revenues from oil and its overall developments are poised to double; still under the behest of Muhammar Qaddafi.

So does the past history of animosity against the West make him the unfitting leader for the AU? Is his rhetoric on several issues of international concern like the crisis in Darfur make him seem otherwise? Perhaps so. But it’s important to examine both sides of story.

Qaddafi took power through a military coup d'état in 1969, a bloodless coup that left few people maimed. Over the years, he has banned all elements of democracy-elections, civil liberties and/or opposition parties.

To find credence, acceptance and at least some nominal legitimacy, he is left with nothing more than embrace, justification and love of dictatorial rule/regimes, the fact that saw him saying words like “multiparty systems are not good for Africa.”

Just because someone is in power illegally, doesn’t necessarily mean he is inept for governance. I don’t okay military rule or dictatorship, but I don’t frown upon those militaristic governments which have proven successful to their respective countries despite their illegitimacies either. There are so many instances of legally chosen governments which have proven useless and inept to their respective countries, while on the other side, there are some illegitimate and dictatorial regimes that have done positive and unimaginable things to their indigenous peoples, e.g. Qaddafi with Libya, Augusto Pinochet of Chile and Simon Bolivar of Bolivia.

Branding Qaddafi as unfit for the AU leadership largely by basing on the same accusations that we have known for years uttered by the West, is like dancing to the tunes and songs played in Europe, while you as a dancer is in Africa.
It is very important for one to exercise his own judgement when dealing with important issues of this nature. Instead of judging from the narrow view of information provided by others. Africa will Unite.

Many thanks to Mr. Michuzi.

Gama, you seem to be clueless as usual. You are contradicting John Mashaka and Shayo, yet supporting their ideas again. Libya was shunned because of terrorism, and now opened because they shunned terrorism.
    How long was it shunned?
The fact that it supported terrorrism, is enough to be careful of ghadaffi.
i am sure you are aware of history, revist your history. i think what Mashaka aand shayo were trying to say was the poor leadership of African leadres, tht is why we are poor.
I see you to be so confused young man,,,

    You are right.

Its better to have a government which is not democracy but doing well to their people rather than to have a Corrupt Democracy Government

Let them called them all the names eg Dictoreship Government or whatever as long they achieved the people expectation that is better.

All goods and services of almost super power coming from Chinese Government and still label them Dictorship government.
The problem of the western world is that "what is right for them is wrong to other countries"

What happen in Gitmo is right or Democracy for those prisoners? How can you put people in prison without charge for almost 3 years and still called your country is democratic country??!!! .I real feel disgusting with the behaviour of western world.

What they preach is not exactly what they do.They are hypocrites people

Indeed, the definition of the term "landlocked economically" was taken from the said weblink "http://www.palgrave-journals.com/ces/journal/v45/n4/full/8100031a.html"
Such a big definition could not have come from my own mind. What i should have done, of which i forgot was to put the words into quotation marks and provide a cited source, as an academic piece should be. So let it be known that the definiton of the term is not mine and was taken from that link. It must be remembered that the aim of my article/response is not to belittle people or to show that i know much more than others, but rather to refute the original article of Mashaka-cum-Shayo and provide clarity and rightful information for the sake of the umma, including the need of seeking outside sources like that link for the benefit of many. So this fact that i copied & pasted the definition of the term "landlocked economically" doesnot bother me at all as long as i know that the Tanzanian umma gets right information.
    Thanks.
