ReplyDeleteMinister hails Karume as courageous lawyer

By Guardian Reporter
A Government minister yesterday described advocate Fatma Karume as a bold and courageous lawyer daring enough to stare corruption in the face and call a spade a spade.
The advocate recently hit newspaper headlines allegedly for threatening a principal resident magistrate at a Dar es Salaam court over the conduct of a pending case against her (Karume) client.
Karume, daughter of Zanzibar President Amani Abeid Karume, is representing a client in a matrimonial case at the Kisutu Resident Magistrate`s Court.
She made sensational news last week after a magistrate withdrew from the case, accusing the counsel of threatening her.
Principal Resident Magistrate Addy Lyamuya said at the court that she would not continue to preside over the case because the advocate had threatened ``to deal with me accordingly``.
Lyamuya was the third magistrate from the same court to withdraw from the case in similar circumstances.
But the advocate has dismissed the magistrates charges and described their withdrawal as a planned boycott that followed her charges that one of them had demanded a bribe from her client.
The advocate added that the magistrates may have deliberately decided not to preside over her client`s case as a way of settling scores following her charges.
The case has since been assigned to another magistrate, with the High Court still working on the saga.
But in a dramatic turn of events, Minister of State Philip Marmo (Presidents Office - Good Governance) yesterday openly supported advocate Fatma Karume over the saga.
``My view is that what advocate Karume did shows that there are aggressive Tanzanians with the courage to say no to corruption in the Judiciary and other areas,` said Marmo at a function in Dar es Salaam.
The minister made the remarks at the presentation of a quarterly monitoring report of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy and Action Plans that named the Judiciary as one of the most corrupt public institutions in Tanzania.
He said time had come for other Tanzanians to emulate the advocate and say no to corrupt officials wherever they may be, adding: If people keep dead quiet or suffer silently, winning the war against corruption will remain a dream.
He appealed to members of the public to cultivate the culture of exposing and saying no to corrupt leaders and officials unfairly denying them access to essential services.
Saying no to corrupt elements the way advocate Karume has so courageously done will help our country tame corruption and related vices, he said.

Big up baba/mama!
ReplyDeleteNew generations are the only ones to bring a substantial change in my beloved TZ.
