A team of students from the School of Electrical & Information Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand have been awarded a silver medal at the SIMagine awards held annually as part of the World 3GSM International Software conference in Barcelona.

David Vannucci, Teddy Mwakabaga and Rolan Christian presented their innovative, Mobiraba, an adaptation of the local Morabaraba game that can be played on a mobile phone. They beat the Chinese team which came in third, while the first prize went to a team from Poland.

Their prize winning innovation is a cellphone based version of the game Morabaraba played by millions of people in Africa and around the world. Mobiraba the cell-phone game was tested at the 2006 National Morabarana Trials and received excellent reviews from experts.

The game allows players to compete online in Morabaraba. Players are able to log on to a game server using a mobile phone and can select either of the two options. The first is a quick game, in which case they would be automatically matched up with another quick game player of a similar level, or opt for an organised game, in which case an invitation message is sent to the chosen opponent.

The online server maintains the results of all the players, as well as rankings and a record of each game.

The invention could be used for the development of Morabaraba, which is played by over 16-million people in South Africa, as it would be possible to organise tournaments “online” for National rankings. Players could play for communities and clubs in online Mobiraba™ forums and purchase additional game play credits, by simply sending an SMS to a premium rated number.

The SIMagine competition is sponsored by Gemalto, one of the largest producers of sim cards in the world and aims to stimulate the development of java-based SIM applications. The competition drew more than 315 entries from companies and universities around the world, of which only eight were selected as finalists.

Prof Barry Dwolatzky from Wits University, who supervises the students says: “This is an honour for the School, the University, South Africa and the students. They managed to beat competitors from countries with advanced software development and developed information systems. We are exceptionally grateful to Vodacom for providing support and material to the students.”

The trio work within the newly established Wits University Convergence Laboratory launched last year.

  3. What an achievement for Tanzania, mara www.smstz.com then Ma-Game... Mochuzi keep us posted

I like the idea of having our traditional games on soft format.. Other games like Chess is popular because it got many distribution channels including soft copies.

I was just wondering game kama Bao its more STRATEGIC than Chess, As in, with Chess u can plan and virtually play to the last move, but with Bao its so hard to just do that. Lakini vijana wengu hatuchezi... kwa sababu kukaa kwenye mabaraza na wazee its not just us we better be Level 8th tunywe bia, lakini lingekuwa kwenye simuzetu... tungecheza at the same time being at Kilimanjaro Hotel.

As for Teddy Mwakabaga... Hongera sana, I think we met like two or three month ago... im gona try and hunt down for your email.

Otherwise... wabongo tuamke. Local programmers can do magic for this country....

Ilikuwa zamani hiyo, siku hizi hata mtoto wa Mheshimiwa Diwani utapata taabu kumkuta kwenye shule za Uswahilini.
