PARKER BACKS UNITED AFTER ROMP
Former Manchester United and England defender Paul Parker believes his old club have "an absolutely fantastic chance" to win the Champions League following their demolition of Roma.
United will face Bayern Munich or AC Milan in the semi-finals and are likely to meet Chelsea or Liverpool in the Athens final should they progress.
And after watching the 7-1 hammering of Roma at Old Trafford, to secure an 8-3 aggregate win and last-four place, Parker said: "Scoring seven against an Italian side is unheard of in any level of football.
"You have to look at the Italians and question how they allowed something like that to happen. But the opportunities United got, they took.
"The goals were absolutely incredible.
"The way the Champions League has gone over the last few years it is open to anybody to go and win it now and when you see a team beat an Italian team 7-1 you've got to say they stand an absolutely fantastic chance of winning it.
"The only thing that could stand in their way is if Bayern Munich get through they will provide more of a contest than AC Milan will. Milan find it difficult to raise their game because they have been chasing all season.
"Bayern will be a tough game because since their change of manager they have got better and better."
Parker, speaking at the announcement of Blue Square's three-year sponsorship of the Football Conference, added: "Tuesday night was the best (United) have played in Europe in quite a while. The next game will be completely different, Bayern will be harder to break down.
"Sir Alex Ferguson very rarely loses semi-finals. I would have to say United can go through."
