Program Officer (to be based in Accra, Ghana)

The Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GYCA) is a youth-led network of 5,000 young leaders and adult allies working in HIV and AIDS in 150 countries. The Coalition is coordinated by four full time staff and implemented by a team of 12 Regional Focal Points based around the world and a growing number of National Focal Points.
Its current programmatic priorities are:
1) Networking and sharing of best practices;
2) Capacity building and technical assistance;
3) Political advocacy; and
4) Preparation for international conferences.

GYCA is a non-profit initiative hosted by the Global Youth Action Network, a registered 501c()3 non-profit in New York City with special consultative status to the United Nations. GYCA has offices in New York and in Accra, Ghana, both based at the Global Youth Action Network.
Job Description:
In line with GYCA’s mission, the Program Officer will be responsible for management of the 12 Regional Focal Points (RFPs), assisting RFPs with management of the over 50 National Focal Points (NFPs), and management of GYCA’s small grants program, as well as other responsibilities detailed below. S/he will report to GYCA’s Program Coordinator and will be based at GYCA’s South Secretariat in Accra, Ghana. S/he may be asked to travel both domestically and/or internationally to represent GYCA at events and meetings.
Key Responsibilities:
• Liaise and communicate with RFPs on a regular basis, including organizing bi-weekly online chats with RFPs and working with RFPs to oversee NFP management;
• Assist and encourage RFPs, NFPs, and members to hold local gatherings and promote the gatherings to other members;
• Create toolkits and other resources to assist RFPs/NFPs and members with their work;
• Strengthen GYCA regional activities and help create methods to engage membership;
• Compile, write, and edit GYCA’s quarterly newsletter, Youth Awake, upload it to the website, and create HTML mailer;
• Update website on a regular basis with news of regional activities, pictures, resources, toolkits, etc.;
• Develop and help design promotional materials for GYCA;
• Oversee GYCA’s small grants program, including publicizing the program, reviewing and selecting proposals, assisting grantees throughout their project period, monitoring and evaluating the program, and writing reports for funders;
• Assist the Program Director with fundraising, including research and writing grant proposals; and
• Recruit, review, and participate in the hiring process for leadership positions within GYCA.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in relevant topic (education, health, economics, political science, sociology, etc.) or equivalent experience;
• Experience doing HIV or related organizing, particularly among young people;
• Knowledge and interest about HIV and young people, particularly in an international context;
• Experience in non-profit/project management;
• Excellent attention to detail and superior organizational and interpersonal skills;
• Excellent English language writing and editorial skills;
• Flexibility and a willingness to work simultaneously on a wide range of tasks and projects, from administrative to programmatic;
• Ability to work independently, yet also committed to being a team player;
• Must be able to take initiative, prioritize, and work well under pressure;
• Proven ability to work in a multi-cultural/international environment;
• French fluency preferred; Spanish and/or Arabic a plus; and
• Basic HTML and graphic design skills are not required but are desirable.
Salary and Benefits: Salary will be commensurate with experience.
Start date: Immediately. The ideal candidate would commit to a minimum of one year.
