nasikia jamaa katubonda kichizi!

It is time members of the East African Community called Tanzania’s bluff. Our southern neighbour has become a veritable impediment to integration and progress in the region.
Everytime a useful proposal is put forward, it throws a spanner in the works. Kenya, Uganda and the two candidate-members of the Community, Rwanda and Burundi, should simply shrug Tanzania off and forge ahead.
The latest Tanzanian objection is the proposal to allow the use of identity cards when crossing borders instead of the requirement for passports, which relatively few ordinary East Africans have anyway.
The effect of the Tanzanian veto is to limit the movement of people about, who in most cases are traders going back and forth. It is difficult to see the logic of Dar es Salaam’s objection.
At this rate, the dream of federation by 2013 will remain dead as long as Tanzania is allowed to dictate terms.
Tanzania has for many years been consumed by a large deceit of thinking it is more important than it actually is.
Basically, it still lives in a time warp where it is forever harping on its old credentials of being a linchpin of the liberation struggles of southern Africa.
WITHOUT DOUBT THIS WAS A historically important role. But the world of today is being shaped not by re-living the progressive glories of the 60s but by learning to adapt to fast-changing economic trends of today.
Tanzania is dirt poor, its economy a fraction of Kenya’s. Further, it lacks the dynamism and skills to drive its economy forward at the pace of its neighbours. Even tiny Rwanda has a better capacity than can be said of Tanzania.
The latter’s prickly sense of wanting to be alone is sadly misguided. Regional prosperity depends on the exchange of skills that free movement of peoples and investment across borders allows.
It is myopic to think Kenyans who venture into Tanzania are only going to take away Tanzanian jobs and opportunities. They are bringing skills, money and enterprise which they cross-pollinate in Tanzania.
It is also wrong to fear that Kenya’s more developed economy is a threat to Tanzania’s and thus should be kept at bay.
That argument flies in the face of all known precedents. Mexico knows the immense benefits it reaps from the North America Free Trade Association (NAFTA) even though its economy can nowhere be compared with the United States’ or Canada’s.
Likewise countries like Slovakia or Croatia would not have been clamouring to join the European Union to be in the company of more advanced members like France and Germany.
But the cost-benefit ratio in such situations favours the poorer members.
Of the leaders of the East Africa Community, President Yoweri Museveni is by far the most far-sighted on this question of integration, He is surely right in urging those countries for the idea to go ahead on their own and cast off the laggards.
One country cannot and should not be allowed to hold the process of integration hostage. Another leader who is emerging as a real visionary is Rwanda’s President, Mr Paul Kagame.
He has already okayed the abolition of work permits for Kenyan professionals going to work there. Kenya too, has agreed on a similar waiver for Rwandan job-seekers.
Jamaa kaua, lkn kuna ukweli ndani yake, tuache woga,en let face the reality. The only thing to fear is fear itself,if we want to see big step in our country we need to put the fear aside, and face the realty by planning to tackle our current issues, and the best way is to unite with our alias.

WATANZANIA MSIKUBALI
ReplyDeleteSHIRIKISHO
NARUDIA TENA
Lazima watakwenda Tanzania. maana Tanzania ndio nchi yenye eneo kubwa la ardhi ina ardhi ipatayo sq km 945,087 wakati Kenya ina 580,367sqkm Uganda 236,040.
7) Nina uhakika hakuna ubishi hata hili shirikisho likianzishwa litakufa.
Haya ndiyo maoni yangu binafsi.

I dont see any reason for Tanzania to join EAC. Let them go ahead with EAC. Let me tell you one this, these guys have no resources including land. I remember one of the cabinet ministers in Uganda saying, we do not have land here in Uganda as we have sold all what we had, that is why we want EAC so that we can get land from countries which have plenty of land for our citizen.
ReplyDeleteImagine, look for Tanzanians working in Kenya and compare with Kenyans working in Tanzania. You cannot compare. there is a lot of foreigners from Kenya and Uganda in Tanzania. These are taking our opportiunities. Let us remain with our beautiful Tanzania.

Amesahau kwamba Kagame ameruhusu yote hayo kwa sababu kwanza ndo wamejiunga na EAC,so he is trying to be polite and impress the rest of the member states.

Ndio waendelee na Umoja wao if they wish mimi sioni sababu ya kujiunga. Kenyans, Ugandans and Rwandese people just want to come and get a stake of TZ. What's next? watuambukize ukabila wao? hayo mataifa kwanza karibu yote yanamatatizo. Moja lina dictator anajidai anakwenda na Demokrasia, linine lina ukabila na lingine ndio kabisa wameuana mamilion na millions. Hatutaki matatizo yao kila mtu aishi kwake.
ReplyDeleteYou should stop blaming Tanzanians and look back to see how far we have come to be where we are. And before I go, you should remember that the great East African Community (upon which the EU is modelled) was literary killed by a Kenyan aristocrat - Njonjo.
ReplyDeletethe guy uses his legal right of speech and it seems he had points, the only way to react on his article is not to defend ourselves against his charges, mere proving a crucial reason for our delaying (if any).
ReplyDeleteIf so, then why do almost all yankees wa kenya wamejaa hapa Tz kutafuta kazi? Benchott yake huyo mkenya..
nyau kabisa
Halafu you are joking guys! Eti uchumi wa Tanzania is just a fraction of Kenya's? Most Kenyans feel alienated from their country. Tanzania will remain to be a proud nation na ni Watanzania pekee ndio watakaoamua hatma ya nchi hii. Tumeungana sana zamani nad enough is enough.
ReplyDeleteRubbish!
ReplyDeleteMuseven is a power-mongering dictator who hates democracy. He is so greedy that he wants to be the FIRST president of the so-called EAST AFRICA FEDERATION.
And, do we know the role of Kenyans in taking RPF to power???
So, dont just think lightly, think deeper. All behaviour is for a particular benefit!

I am a Tanzanian but unfortunately I bitterly concur with the writer of this article. As Tanzanians we have the notion and mentality we are not yet ready for a federation yet we very well know the pros of economic integration out-weighs its cons. It is explicit that regional integration is advantageous for the sake of the growth of a country.
ReplyDeleteProtectionism wont help us, even if we were given 50 yrs to prepare still we won’t think that we would be ready. Look at TTCL for so long it enjoyed monopoly (protectionism) and the service offered by them those days were pathetic, you would even bribe to get a telephone line by then. When competitors came many thought that TTCL would not survive, but actually when you go their offices to enquire utakutana na assistants wa customer wenye lugha mzuri. zamani nilipokuwa mdogo nilikuwa naogopa hata kwenda TTCL kuulizia a telephone directory ambayo ni haki ya mteja ila wafanyikazi husika walikuwa wajeuri na wakali. Competitions made it possible and look at how far Tanzania is in terms of comminication. TTCL pekee yaingetufikisha hapa.
Mimi kama mimi, East Africa ikiingia nitakuwa muathirika mmoja wapo, nalifahamu hilo. hapa namaanisha kuwa competition katika job interviews zitakuwa kali sana, employers will want to get the best staff (Technical-know-how sio Technical-know-who ndo ita-apply). this problem will only be in the short run, we will survive and compite.
MAWAZO YANGU
a) watu milioni 40 sio sawa na watu milioni 120.
Good job.
Hapa nina maana gani?
atua kutoka kwa EAC for the time being.
2b) . Hamna tatizo.
2c) Shida ipo tu pale Tanzania inaonyesha a lot of juvenile behaviour and indecision kwa kuweka pingamizi kila kuchao kwenye maswala nyeti kama free movement of people (IDS) and land/property laws (part of the requisite basis for investor confidence).
3. TANZANIAN XENOPHOBIA AND KENYAN REACTION TO IT.
Ila tunawaomba mkuwe wakweli. Semeni hamtaki kujiunga kwa sasa because of 1, 2, 3, 4 na mtaeleweka. Lakini msitumie delaying tactics. Siku zinasonga, sisi tunawangojeni, siku zinasonga sisi tunawangojeni tuuuu. Hapana. Tuwacheni sisi tusonge mbele na mtatujoini mtakapokuwa ready.
4. FAIDA YA TANZANIA KUJIONDOA RASMI FROM EAC NI IPI?
Mtapata wakti mwanana kudhibitisha woga wenu kwamba sisi tunatakakuungana tuu kwasababu ya kuwapora nyie. Mtaona sis tukiungana na wengine na mchakato huu ushaanza by the way. Wakifikiria kama nyinyi wangetunyima ila walijua kwamba wamebenefit from us and they will continue to do so in future na sisi pia tuta benefit kwao kama tulivobenefit tayari. Kumbuka Rwanda haina mali asili kama za Tanzania ila hawakuona uoga kuungana nasi kwenye issue nyeti kama work permit ingawa wanafahamu more Kenyans will probably work in Rwanda than Rwandans in Kenya. Pengine wameiona nafasi yao kwasababu hao ni landlocked au nchi kasoro bahari na wataweza kuimport their goods through mombasa at no costs in the near future in case they start establishing STRATEGIC links with Kenya and its port of Mombasa. Kagame ametoa ekari 4 hapo Kigali. Kenya naye emawapatia ekari 5 kila nchi jijini mombasa watakapowezakujenga godowns ili waweze kupangia mizigo yao inayoingia usiku na mchana kupitia bandari ya mombasa. Haya matatu ni examples safi vile nchi zinaweza kuendesha mambo yao pamoja bila noma. Kwa hiyo Tanzanians dont be afraid please we can work without you for the time being.
5 MORE ON KENYAN-TANZANIAN SOCIAL RELATIONS
It is true that some Kenyans and others from the rest of the member countries ni wahuni na wameleta maafa Tanzania kupitia uvunjaji wa sheria na makosa ya jinai. Anaweza kuwaambia kwamba ordinary Kenyans have a high opinion of the Tanzanians. Kwa hiyo msiwasikize a few arrogant Nairobi based elites na mkatoa judgment al manusura hata mchukue bunduki na kutuvamia kwa ghadhabu. We love you more than we love any other Africans. Take my word for that.
6. Jiondoeni RASMI from the EAC. Hamna noma. Tuache mutual suspicion na tuongee live live ndipo tutasaidiana.
Kiufupi:
Msipingepinge kila kipengo cha mchakato wa EAC na EAF out of your radical national interests. Badala yake jiondoeni rasmi. Sisi tuendelee. Mkiona baadaye mwataka kurejea basi mtarejea. Lakini msitwashike wengine mahabusu wa your own national interests.
From 1974 Kiswahili ni lugha rasmi bungeni Kenya. ENGLISH pia ni a Kenyan language after tulipoipatia an OFFICIAL status in our katiba. ENGLISH IS AS KENYAN AS IT IS AMERICAN AND AS KENYAN AS IT IS TANZANIAN.

ReplyDeleteNamuunga mkono mjumbe aliyetoa maoni yake awali, but there need to be serious talks so that those fears are addressed. The land issue is complex so is national identity. I feel depressed when all people say is Yes we want or No we don't want. Those fears are realistic and CAN be addressed: But there is too much to loose if EAC fails! Angalia England kwa mfano. The EU is still possible with England having reservations on many issues within the European Union. But still England participates. I am not saying we should adopt the EU style, all I am saying is that there can be solutions that accomodate Everyone's fear. But also, we need to dare: Obama angekua na mawazo yawatu walikua wakimwambia kwamba wazungu hawako tayari kumpigia kura, he couldn't be where he is now. Great discussion and please no hate!
ReplyDeleteWe're not afraid to join EAC.We're afraid of jumping and being bussed in the bandwagon whose end will be disastrous. We better go solo than allowing ourselves to such cheap lies and sacrifice of our future.

EAC without equity will be implausible
KENYA’S media lately unleashed accusations and curses against Tanzania thanks to the sin of not complying with their demands.
One of the articles fired salvos, ire and tantrums, not to mention dirty language. It reprimanded and accused Tanzania of not consenting to free movement and land acquisition by citizens of other member countries of the East African Community.
’’Tanzania is proving to be a liability in EA integration’’, read the article.
We’d rather shrug this straitjacket off than enter a forceful marriage of convenience if need be.
Interestingly, the myopic author shamelessly said, "Tanzania greatly likes to be recognized for her ’internationalist’ policies, with her leaders spending more time strutting the world than they do in their own country, though the facts show they are quite parochial."
By the way, who’s parochial in reality? We may be. But we’ve nary butchered one another simply because we’re from different tribes. Kenya’s allegations may be right to some degree.
Under our internationalism we’re accused of made it possible for erstwhile foes President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga to sit together and resolve their differences.
And Kenyans, thanks to that breakthrough, are relatively enjoying peace after butchering one another.
Again, when one sees how our leaders ’waste time globe-trotting’, one should as well have seen how his own legislators do not want to pay tax on top of amassing big chunks of land while the majority of their people suffer for lack of the same.
Also, Tanzania is blamed for not consenting to the so-called free movement. Other EAC members would like their nations to use identity cards for travel in the region in lieu of passports. They would like to abolish work permits in the region, not to mention free land acquisition.
Another thing, however weak, is that we’re afraid of Kenyan vibrant economy. Blindly and shamelessly they say: ’Tanzania is dirt poor, its economy a fraction of Kenya’s. Further, it lacks the dynamism and skills to drive its economy forward at the pace of its neighbours. Even tiny Rwanda has a better capacity than [what] can be said of Tanzania.’
What nonsense! If this is the case, then why are Kenyans hollering for not joining them? Shall integration be an in-thing, we still can join Mozambique or even Zambia.
They erroneously aver that we are giving the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) too much. So be it, if it protects and safeguards our interests. ’Tanzania’s generally confused posture comes out in its obsession to belong to the SADC,’’ they add.
Let me tell our integration tutors one thing. They’re the ones who introduced the East African passport. This consumed a lot of money in printing and designing not to mention purchasing them.
We challenge Kenyan authorities to harmonize their land policies and equally re-distribute land to the landless majority -- our landless brethren and sisters in Kenya.
It is an open secret that almost all fertile land is in the hands of a few foreigners or rulers who grabbed it from the wananchi.
Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda would like to see ’East Africans’ acquire land in any state they deem fit. But again, apart from Tanzania, which country still has land for such purpose?
We know, in Kenya much of fertile land is owned by a few select in power or that used to be in power. In a word, Kenya has a very nasty land policy that for long has left the ordinary people landless and sidelined.
For instance, the family of the country's first president, Jomo Kenyatta, owns a chunk of land the size of Nyanza Province.
Similarly, that of his successor, Daniel arap Moi and Kibaki’s also own big parcels of land not to mention former British settlers. In May 2006 Cholmondeley, grandson of Lord Delamere, shot dead an innocent Kenyan for trespass on his Soysambu farm.
In other words, Kenyan rulers, even Rwandans, are looking for free land to offer to their man-made landless majority. Before we do so, let greedy rulers re-distribute the parcels they are holding without even putting them to use.
Another point is, Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda have big populations compared to the size of their land. So, instead of planning and controlling their population, they’d like to dump that burden to Tanzania!
True, if Tanzania consented to this ploy, the future of its coming generations would be doomed. Look at this reality in numbers. Burundi is 27,830 sq km with a population of 8,691,005 or
315 people concentrated in a square kilometre.
Rwanda is 26,338 sq km with a population of 8.3 million that is set to double to 16 million by 2020. Its population density is the highest in Africa and has risen from 183 per sq km in 1981 to 345 per sq km in 2000.
Rwanda’s rural population per square kilometre of arable land was around 901 in 1999 -- one of the highest in Africa.
Kenya is 582,650 sq km with a population of over 30 million. Density is 2 settlers per sq. km, while in the rich and fertile western region, population density goes up to 120 settlers per sq. km.
Uganda is 241,139 sq km with a population of at least 27.7 million and a density of 241 per sq km in 1999. Its population is projected to explode to approximately 66,305,000 by 2050.
Tanzania is 945,100 sq km and, according to the United Nations, had an estimated population of 36,977,000 in 2003. The population density was then 39 per sq km.
Demographic realities are not something to ignore. Even the superpower and richest country of the world, the US, is currently erecting a 3,200 kilometre fence on its border with Mexico to curb illegal immigrants. But Mexico like Kenya does not see this.
Another killer point, Tanzania still remembers the loss suffered from the 1977 debacle of the first East African Community as a result of megalomaniac rule in Kenya and Uganda.
History is a good judge. Shortly before attaining independence in 1961, Tanzania wanted to delay its autonomy until all colonies in East Africa were ready for the same status. What exemplary pan-African love and spirit!
We better go or remain solo than being shuffled and bussed in a bandwagon for our peril.

Huyu jamaa yuko so frustrated. Kama tuko nyuma kiuchumi na we are freaking poor why they need us? Go ahead and get that thing going on. They don't need us to form the community. Puleeese.....
ReplyDeleteWith people like him that is why we are so skeptical about this thing....we don't need this....why now...what went wrong before and now it will be so perfect.....
ati anasema at this rate the dream of federation by 2013 will remain dead as long as Tanzania is allowed to dictate the terms. heehehehhehehee I didn't know it's their dream...mama.....something sounds fishy here....they are dreaming to dictate us, dreaming of taking our land, dreaming of crossing back and forth and rule our economy.
Yeah tutakubali they are better than us..... so just leave us alone....they are so up in the air.....Tell this guy to leave us alone....

ReplyDeleteTanzania should not be pressured by Kenya or any other country forge a union whose terms are not in its favour. I hope Gitau's article is not a representation of Kenyans in general because such is the arrogance that remind us as to why we need not rush to the union. Sure, Tanzania is poor but Kenya is just as poor. Infact dirt poor. Am glad Tanzania is taking its time to evaluate its options as a country. If the others feel we're slowing them down, let them move on! At the end of the day, it terms of resources and opportunities, Tanzania has the most to offer to the rest of the EA countries.

Wabongo tutapoteza mengi kuliko tutakayopata tukiingia kwenye huu muungano. kwanza angalia nchi zote nne (Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda) zote zimejaa ubinafsi na ukabila. tukikubali kuingia hii kitu watatuingiza kwenye mikwaruzano waliyonayo wao ya kibinafsi. NO EAC!!!
ReplyDeleteWe Meku iko chizi wewe. Kujiamini hakumaanishi kulala mlango wazi kila atakaye na aingie. if that is your understanding of kujiamini, lala mlango wazi na panga kitandani. Wakija kumrape mtoto wako utawatishia panga. Fikiria kabla hujaropoka. You are preparing a future not only for your children, but for your grandchildren and great grandchildren. if that is the nonsense you will decide for them, then i trully fear for your ofsprings...!!!
