Workshop in Chake Chake 16. – 27. March 2009 at the Tibirinzi Grounds in Chake Chake / Pemba

Workshop concert: March, 27^th, 8 pm at Tibirinzi Grounds in Chake Chake / Pemba

 

To improve the musical education for musicians in rural areas, the Dhow Countries Music Academy developed a Rural Outreach Progam which is funded by UNESCO. In 2005 DCMA teachers went to Pemba for the first time to hold a workshop. Since then at least one workshop took place per year.

 

The teachers of this years workshop are Sadiq Juma (accordion & voice/Taarab), Charlie Rishmawi (tabla, theory, voice/ Arabic), Maulid Mkadam (qanun) and Mohammed Othman as teamleader (violin). Like always teachers take a number of instruments with them to give the participants the chance to practice.

The director of Culture in Pemba, Hamad Juma, is the local partner in the organization and implementation of this workshop.

 

Thirteen artists from various musical clubs in Pemba will participate in this workshop. They will receive daily lessons in their respective instruments. The teachers also took along enough instruments for exercising, since these amateur musicians face the lack of (good) instruments and even violin strings aren’t available most of the time.

Apart from individual instrument lessons they will receive classes on theory and ensemble.

 

The results of the workshop will be presented at a concert at the end of the workshop on March 27^th at 8 pm. Admission will be free.
