Tanzania As a Slumber economy…
a response to J. Mashaka
Praises to John Mashaka for his wonderful article/s on Tanzania, mostly his uncompromising love of his country…the fact that has validated itself in the tone and emotions of his messages. However, there’re several issues we can both agree to disagree, not for the purpose of flaunting our self-conceits, but for the mere education of the umma, The Tanzanians.
There are several issues that Mashaka have postulated which shows just how much the U.S. has shaped him, [hopefully for good]. But with regard to Tanzania’s history of nonalignment and of being unmoved by the U.S. influence and its policies of “protecting our interests,” such a shape is dangerous. It translates to a simple definition of puppetry.
Maybe because U.S. is the only country that Mr. John Mashaka has lived outside of Africa, hence his incessant draw of comparisons and contrasts between our country(Tanzania) and the U.S. For that we can forgive him. But if he’s lived in any other country, for example England or China, then his oft-reference of U.S. is again, dangerous. It’s because of that reason, I will also use the U.S. as an example in my response.
Tanzania is not the poorest country in the world. I actually still have a doubt with the definition of the word “poor” itself. The standards of measuring poverty or richness varies from country to country; judged on cultural contexts. What is regarded as rich in one, can be a matter of ridicule to others. This is how it should have been. Unfortunately it is not. That‘s why some if not most people accepts this word .
The very same people who brands us poor, uses the U.S. currency (Dollar) as a yardstick. Oftentimes you will hear them say “We’re living on less than a dollar per day.” One dollar can buy nothing in the West, specifically in the U.S. Everything is above $1. In Tanzania, one dollar converts to a thousand shillings.
Even though I have been away from Tanzania for years now, I still believe that one thousand shillings can guarantee a lunch and/or dinner to a family, on a simple meal, because goods and products are still cheaper compared to U.S. It’s true that money is everything. Money means richness, but not happiness. I have seen loads of people who possesses millions of money yet their lives are desperate, broken marriages and families.
A maasai [for example], despite his poverty, is probably the most happiest person on earth.I do agree with you on the part of sacrifice, only if it means being extroverts as opposed to introverts…meaning we have to think of others before we think of ourselves, only.
This message has a lot of weight to our leaders, that they should remember the people(Wananchi) who elected them through their constituencies. Instead of fattening their pockets and swag bellies, they should remember the litany of promises and ideas that propelled their victories and present careers. But your usage of the word “sacrifice” has appeared paradoxical.
Let me quote, “ We must understand that country’s leadership is a small percentage of the almost 40 million Tanzanians. We must be realistic. We must bear responsibilities for voting in , time after time those who have driven our country into the current situation and abused our trust.
The fisadis do not operate in the vacuum, they are elected by us. You and I have the voice and the power to strip them of their positions and even jail them, and the lacking tool is courage, cohesion and unity. We must be united and shun all elements that divides us while embracing the forces that unites us. We must embark on the wagon that promotes unity for us to make progress. We’re lacking what is called self-sacrifice; we must be sacrificial, and be ready to place the interests of the country ahead of our own, in order to pull away from the list of poorest nations.”
Well, very few of us had any idea that those we elect will end up becoming corrupt officials. We come to know the behaviours and qualities of our leaders once we elect them.Doesn’t the president do what was expected…arresting the fisadis and even jailing some for the corruptions?
Exactly what kind of sacrifice do you talk about…presenting to the neighbour every evening a bowl of rice? Stopping the pursuance of our wants and needs for the sake of others? Who is really ready for that? That sense of commonness is long gone, with the wind of change that saw socio-capitalism replacing socialism.
The communal regard and care were elements of socialism during Nyerere‘s epoch. Isn’t this semantics that today we talk of what failed our economy in the past? Don’t get me wrong, the killings of Albinos are the most barbaric of acts in our society.
But such a wave has a trendy start and eventual end. With rising condemnation and shame associated with it, the killings will end and those witchdoctors will find other requirements. What surprises me from these witchdoctors and the overall witchcraft, is the failure to enrich themselves, while promising to help enrich others.
In Burundi, and Haiti, the killings of albinos are common also. It’s true that our leaders fail us, even though we’re the ones who elected them. But history has shown with repeated constancy just how much easy it is to see things when one is outside of it. When you’re inside, you will not see them. In other words, we see the evils committed by our leaders because we’re outside as Wananchi, but when one of us Wananchis gets elected and sit among other leaders, he/she will commit the same evils. Sacrifice is not a concrete solution to our problems; of getting out of so-called “poorest nations” list.
There will be a solution to our problems that involves 3Dimensional analysis of economic, social and political approaches, that will go in hand with time and patience. With time, our leaders will come to understand that some of Africa’s problems could actually be tackled without the West. Africa itself as a continent is huge enough to cater for its own peoples.
The free and international trade proposals could be done within the continent with mutual regard and love that will divert all the attention from the oft-unfair and unequal balances of the West to other corners of Africa. The U.S. got independence from Britain in 1776, enjoyed over 300 years of free labour during the slave period before it arrived to where it is today. Compared to Tanzania, we have only been free from the colonists for 40 years now.
The comparison that you draw between the two countries is totally unfair. Who had thought that we would today be having a modern standard football field that rival others in the West? You can see that with time, patience and resilience, we are making progress. Israel is not Israel if it’s not for the U.S. There is not magic in the way the Israelis have transformed the arid lands of Middle East into arable. It only takes technology and money.
This is the country that receives over $3 billions every year from the U.S. It is the first and the largest annual recipient of U.S. financial assistance. Total U.S. aid to Israel is approximately one-third of the overall American foreign-aid budget, even though Israel comprises just .001 percent (7 million) of the world's population and already has one of the world's higher per capita incomes.
The present form of Israel in its strength of military and economy comes under the behest of the U.S.; in a father and son relationship. In the article to come, I will offer my thoughts for the solution to our problems; a 3Dimensional analysis that touches both internal and external factors of economy, politics and society-for our present state of affairs.
For now, I rest my case.
Thanks.

  1. Mokes,

Nice rhetoric. Keep working on it so that you can refine problem definition and recommendations.

As for the value of $1, I'll comment on Dar. $1 will buy Tshs. 1,200.

Tshs. 1,200/- is enough for following meals:

    1. "Chipsi kavu" one plate at a roadside makeshift chips kiosk (not a properly built up restaurant, where the same would cost Tshs. 1,500/- to 2,000/-)

    2. "Chipsi dume" (cassava) 12 or 24 pieces depending on whether you are buying from a 50-shilling or a 100-shilling joint.

In short in Dar es Salaam $1 will buy a bare bones meal for one adult only for a day or just for one meal depending on type of meal.

And it will not be a balanced diet. Just carbohydrates to pump some energy into the body.

In the hinterlands such as Mbeya or Iringa the picture may be better. But I'll leave it to folks living in those areas to comment.

    Ubishani wa Chai na Maandazi....
Muandishi, i think you don't like the dolla to be the benchmark of poverty in Tanzania. OK, according to MKUKUTA, Mh Jakaya na wenzie wanataka kupunguza umasikini kwa 50% kutoka 14.4 Million kwenda kwenye 7.7 Million na kipimo wanachotumia ni shillingi 500 kwa siku. Sasa what is better 500 shilingi au $1??

Kelele za kusema kwamba Tuna natural resource wakati hatuna Human Capital, hakuna Know How Technology, Poor Policies, Lack of leadership na mengine mengi mtapiga kelele tuuu......

  3. You nailed it home Mokes. the problem is, this blog of Umma is not for the intellectuals. It only takes five articles to be published here and people will ask you to be their future President.

Here, people just love their beers, women, gossips, wedding parties, clubbing and dissing Tanzanians who are living or working abroad. And of course, it is a site best loved by the government to print their propaganda.

I like visiting this site to be in touch with my beloved Tanzania but I have long given up on ever educating or sharing my views with my countrymen here because most of us are just not intellectually challenged. Some are even honest with you and want you to change your subject because they are bored with it. It is difficult to be interested on subjects you are not aware of or educated in.

There is a lot of hatred, jelousy, racism and down right stupidity going on here. I suppose it reflects our society as a whole since every Tom, Dick and Harry has access to an internet cafe now and wants his/her opinion heard.

How do you debate in such an environment? Just browse over the previous intellectual debates on the site and read the opinions, you will see my point very clearly. Don't waste your time, but do come and be entertained here, its a lot of fun and takes the stress of work out of the system. BUT if you are looking for a debating site, you are in the wrong site bro.

    Best wishes,

  5. Mr. Gama, I think you are misguided here; Reading Mashaka's commentary and your response, you seem to be off the track

On the issue of Albino's, Mashaka said, that the problem lies in the hands of the people, we the people must identify the killers and report them to the authorities instead of waiting the government to work magic.

sorry, I dont have time, but seemingly that is a failure on your side. You have flanked the

Mashaka has very little knowledge about our country, he even thinks our regions are provinces, shame on him. he can't differentiate between the two.

Mashaka has no idea why Israel is developed. Mashaka only thinks in terms of what others say in the Western magazines and newsletters.

People like Gama knows well our country and knows what they are talking about; it is unfortunate that this blog is full of nonsense people.

    Gama you are right.

Mashaka is mediocre sort of, he can't argue with people who know their staff. In fact, the more he writes the more he reveals himself and it is just a matter of time before all intellectuals throw him to the gutter.

  18. Though Mokes Gama had little struggle in writing his thesis but overall he got his good share of it by explaining in details line by line so as everybody can get his point.
Don’t make the mistake of thinking John Mashaka is a messiah to our country, and it’s ridiculous to see how his protégés in this site praising him night and day and I’m convinced even John Mashaka fart those idiots still going to clap hands for him.
I believe most of his followers have little or limited knowledge as far as I’m concerned. People real need to through check this guy and stop him from taking advantage of poor and uneducated people who cheering him for personal gains.
It’s funny that someone can judge other’s intelligence based on English language skills like we’re doing here. This reminds me of my childhood, where I used to visit my grandparents when school closed and there I met a lot of kids who can barely speak Swahili perhaps all they know was a local tribe language. I was perceived as a genius child just for conveying the language of our nation(swahili).....was that a real reason for me as kid to be called genius if not what the difference with John Mashaka??

  20. Nakubaliana na Gama's comments kwasababu zifuatazo:
    1. Kwanza, unapofanya utafiti wa maendeleo sio kuongelea unachokiona pale unatakiwa kuongelea kwanini kimetokea for Mashaka anaongelea what he sees on the ground halafu ana narrate..hiyo fala yeyote anaweza kufanya, (Mwandishi na siyo mchumi) wanasiasa wetu wote wanafanya hivyo..mfano kusema hakuna maji, hakuna umeme, kilimo duni, utawala mbovu all sorts of things ...what mashaka is doing "is listing the situation that is a simple and stupid to call it analysis, it is not a research in the sense of it! mediocre like no realities at all,
    2. Comparing a Israel and Tanzania is being not realistics at all, gama has pointed out the amount of funding and direct technoligical support israel is receiving from US ...
    3. Situational analysis is starting point for any discussion concerning our economy; Lazima tujiuliza kama Taifa au tufanye SWOT analysis mfano:
What are our streght - that is things we can do our self as individual, family , group, village, ward, district, mkoa, taifa, east africa, regional blocks and things which require global inititave
hili likashafanyika in different locations then each family/individual/village/can prioritize the needs and go for it!
that is why I support gama
    3. Mashaka made a very stupid generalization of poverty concepts, umaskini tanzania huwezi ku-generalize lazima ukubali mafanikio yaliyopo, jitahada zilizopo, na changamoto zake...mashaka point zake ni malalamiko amabyo tumeshazoea sana brother! anyway anaenglish nzuri siyo uchumi..inafaa aende kuandika kwenye magazeti mambo ya lugha siyo uchumi.
4.Again Ubaya wa generalize..mashaka ameshindwa kutofautisha "quality of life" and poverty this are two different things! mfano " Mmasai in Arusha ana ng'ombe 200 ambao wana thamani ya millions lakini anaishi chini ya dola..hii ina maana huyu mtu hajui quality of life na si kwamba hana uwezo wa kula, kulala na kupata elimu nzuri reosurces anazo!!!
Mkulima wa Mbyea, manyara na Mwanza ana ana ekari 100 anavuma magunia zaidi ya 1000 ya mahindi anapata millions of money ana trekta lakini angalia maisha yake..chini ya dola what is!! analysis is important than narrations of economic issues be guided masshaka

To Mdau wa Tokyo: I suppose by the phrase "not intellectually challenged" in your posting (as in "most of us are just not intellectually challenged"), you REALLY intended to mean "feeble minded", "mentally deficient" or some such similar negative and insulting connotation. Therefore you should have left out the "not" before the relevant phrase.

To Mokes Gama: there's nowhere in Mashaka's essay where he claims Tanzania to be "the poorest country in the world": a point which you then use to embark on a long, winded multi-paragraph discourse in a vain attempt to prove Mashaka wrong. What a waste! All because Mashaka mentioned that Tanzania IS among the world's poorest countries: which is a factual nobrainer based on reality, and wouldn't help a damn thing thing even if you filled several thick volumes with theory, statistics, figure charts, hypotheses and rest of academic mumbo jumbo trying to demonstrate otherwise.

Naomba ueleze unataka kusema nini au amekuharibia nini. Kiswahili chako kinagonga mkenge hapo ndugu au ni maandishi ya Habba?

"ILA WEWE MOKES GAMA UMETUHARIBIA MDAU FROM JAPAN"

    Shukurani Balozi.

    Mdau ya Tokyo, Japan

    Sincerely,
    Mdau wa Tokyo, Japan.
