Thirteen African women travelled to Los Angeles last week for a two-day conference on something that had to do with health matters. Imagine, going to a 21st century hospital to seek cure for 17th century ailments!

It would make sense if those ladies went to Hollywood to learn the latest art in make-up, the latest breast implant technique or similar cosmetic stuff; but how on earth does anybody expect Los Angeles to know anything about Malaria, child and maternal mortality, malnutrition etc?

Mungo Park was Scottish, so nobody in LA would care that malaria, the disease that killed his son Thomas, almost 200 years ago is still killing the people he helped to enslave. Even the local newspaper (The Los Angeles Times, no less) was understandably suspicious of such senseless
 incongruity.

Its edition of 22/04 carried the story of the arrival of thirteen wives of African leaders with a very telling headline: “For African First Ladies, health issues are a chance to remake their image”. Or in African English, “A chance to show off”. Alexandra Zavis, the LA Times reporter described them as dressed in sleek suits, eye-catching robes, spiky shoes and designer glasses.

And inside their heads they carried enough ignorance to turn Harvard into a zoo.

Oh, there were some smart ones among them such as Queen LaMbikiza of Swaziland who defied tradition and qualified as a lawyer, but you need more than degrees to be educated; otherwise why should Sia Nyama Koroma, the Sierra Leonean First Lady and a London-trained psychiatrist nurse at that, assume that African First Ladies are loved, adored and even respected by Africans?

Hear her: “As First Ladies, people listen to us, people want to see us, the crowd goes with us” Really? In my country many people will describe that statement as very, very stupid.

But Koroma, 51, did come close to something more factual.
She said: “We are very close to these Presidents…whatever we tell them sticks in their heads”. Now that is something, in my country, that we can all understand. So ladies, how about telling them this simple message: Stop stealing our money, stop rigging elections, and we won’t have malaria, malnutrition and other scourges no more.

About the roll call that you must no doubt be itching to hear, our own Turai was there, as well as other elegant names such as Chantal Biya (Cameroun), Adelcia Pires (Cape Verde), Hadija Tanja (Niger Republic), Ana Dos Santo (Angola), etc, etc.

But then in spite of their powerful marital positions, they still needed the presence of Holly power ladies like Sharon Stone and Diane Lane to attract the press. See? One other thing: Michelle Obama didn’t even know they were in town. African First Ladies indeed.

Spot on!!!! Super Star wannabes. I was impressed with our first lady though. Mrs Kikwete did us proud by wearing an elegant Tanzanian outfit. Achana na hao wengine who were clad in super expensive Channel suits while people in their countries are dying of malnutrition, malaria, lack of medical facilities etc. Shame on them!! Mama JK juuu kwa kurepresent Bongo in full.

Sasa hao African First Ladies wanaowaza kujiremba muda wote hata kushika mwiko wa ugali walishasahau, ndio maana walisemwa vibaya.

not only that i'm wondering why african first ladies should go to adress their poverty problem in LA in the name of a woman but also why africa should be wrangling in poverty per se up to this era!
it is clear that they do what their husbands are doing, day and night flying to white people's countries with the same message of begging for the sake oh their hungry, poverversty stricken citicens! what a shame it is in this 21century!!
they are playing the mind of our bwana mkubwa's wakiwauzia silaha za kuja kuuwana wakati watu wako busy wanaharibu miundo mbinu ya nchi zao, hospitali, milipuko ya magonjwa inatokea na watu kutangatanga huku na kule, wasela wanaokota almasi na dhahabu kiulaini in exchange kwa silaha wanazozitupa jalalani africa!HADI WATU WATAKAPO FUNGUKA MACHO WAJIOKOE WENYEWE VINGINEVYO if you shout a video of people starving you go to show on TV, those who are watching have nothing to do with you than just watch funny images, wondwer how come up to this era you are in such terrible condition and forget about it,and continue with their deals as usual!WAKO SAHIHI MAANA IS NOT THEIR BUSINESS AT ALL.is your problem and not theirs,so you and i we are responsible to solve our problem!!!!!

    I LOVE YOUR GUTS!!!!!
Very well said...you should send this article to as many blogs from the countries those 1st ladies came from. The message needs to be passed on to them then hopefully next time there won't be such non-sense!
I couldn't believe when I first heard about it. I mean the least they could do is find a country in Africa to discuss the so called "meeting agenda" the money spent in hotels and all other luxuries to boost & circulate that money in africa!

    Anonymous # 4:

Wewe ndo umechemsha ndugu yangu. I think you missed the point that I was trying to make. The other First Ladies were clad in expensive WESTERNIZED attires costing their taxpayers thousands of dollars while people in their countries are dying of poverty and diseases. Mama JK wore nguo nzuri ya KiTZ, kama sijakosea ya Kitenge chenye bendera ya nchi yetu. She was embracing our culture and showing that you do not need to be dressed like Hollywood supermodels to get the point across. To be honest with you, I think problems in our continent can only be fixed by US, nobody else. Most of the celebrities are just exploiting our poverty for cheap publicity. In order for us to solve our own damn problems, we need visionary and patriotic leaders kama Mwalimu Nyerere, Kwame Nkurumah, Paul Kagame, Mandela etc. Real and patriotic Africans stand up!!!! Mungu ibariki Africa!! Uzalendo juu, mafisadi chiniiiii!
