The government has commended efforts by the private sector in promoting the country’s tourism through sports.
This was said yesterday by the Mwanza Regional Commissioner Abbas Kandoro at the corporate launch of the Rock City marathon planned for October 4 here.
The function was held at the four-star Nyumbani Hotels and Resorts in Mwanza.
In a speech read on his behalf by the Nyamagana District Commissioner Cleophas Rugarabamu, the RC said that the domestic tourism could record a tangible pace if the sector was well marketed locally.
“Tanzania stands to improve its revenues if the tourism sector is full developed, but this could work well if we encourage our own people to join in such effort”, he said at the gathering attended by representatives from different companies.
He said that sports is among the best tools to promote the local tourism sector and called for more concerted efforts towards that endeavour. He called upon companies and individuals to support the event which he said could turn around the economy of the Lake Zone region and the nation in general.
“Mwanza should be promoted so that tourists going to Serengeti could use our airport which is near to the park than landing in Kilimanjaro or Arusha which is far and make the tourists tired”, he said.
According to the co-ordinator of the race, Phillipo Simon said the race will start at the CCM Kirumba Stadium in the morning and will pass through the city streets and back to the stadium.
Phillipo said that the marathon has been sponsored by Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL), Nyumbani Hotels and Resorts Limited, National Social Security (NSSF), New Africa Hotel and 1&1 Internet Solutions Ltd. It has been organized by Capital-Plus International, an integrated communications firm.
He said that registration forms are available at Nyumbani Hotels and Resorts Limited in Mwanza, CCM Kirumba Stadium, Capital- Plus International Limited, Athletics Tanzania (AT) headquarters in Dar es Salaam and Pizzeria Restaurant in Mwanza.

Theme of the marathon, according to Phillipo is “Promoting local tourism through sports”.
He mentioned some of the tourism attractions as Saa Nane Island, Rubondo and the huge hanging rocks in Lake Victoria.
Phillipo said that there would also three other events. These include a five-kilometre fun race, two-kilometre race for people with disabilities and three-kilometre corporate classic race.
