Shukuru Munro is on a journey to fundraise for her former village in Tanzania - with the help of her three-legged dog Bart. No stranger to running, the 34-year-old said she used to run in jandals and her school uniform to get to her local school - 10km away.
Since moving to New Zealand a decade ago with her husband Neil, Mrs Munro said she had taken up running and was more accustomed to running with her trusty sidekick Bart, and now wears a pair of running shoes, rather than jandals.
The border collie cross lost his right rear leg three years ago as a puppy, when he was hit by a car.
Despite the loss of a limb, Bart always leads her on training runs around Otago Peninsula, with the pair covering as much as 30km on a single run.
"He is my company, and he is very fit," Mrs Munro said.
Mrs Munro said with her family set to return to her village of Kondoa for two months in February, she had decided to fundraise to help buy educational tools for the local school.
Last year she competed in her first marathon in 3hr 38min, and planned on running the 23km Otago Peninsula Challenge next month, where she hopes to take donations- and Bart if organisers allow him to accompany her.
