The International Conference on the Great lakes Region (ICGLR) in collaboration with the Government of Tanzania and with the support of UNIFEM is organizing a workshop on conflict prevention, mediation and peace building for the first group of Senior Women Leaders from ICGLR Member States at the Beach Comber Hotel, Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, from 11th -12th January 2010.
This will be the first group of women in the Great Lakes Region to be trained on conflict prevention, mediation and peace building. Participants are leaders of organisations from Civil Society or representatives of constituencies or communities in border areas of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and the Republic of Tanzania.
The objective of the training is to strengthen the capacity of women Civil Society Leaders in conflict management, including preventing conflicts from escalating into crises, mediation as well as conflict transformation. The training will contribute to achieve the aims of the Dar Es Salaam Declaration and those of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security to ensure that women are empowered to play their rightful and vital role in helping their countries prevent, and recover from conflict.
The expectation is that women will acquire required skills that will allow them to effectively and meaningfully contribute to peace building processes and to tackle some issues that are often left out during peace negotiations. One example is the issue of sexual violence that is not well acknowledged and addressed in many cases of ceasefire and other mediated agreements, although it constitutes a big threat to peace and development.
The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region has the objective of finding a lasting solution to the multiple and endemic problems facing the region and to create conducive environment where both women and men can contribute equally to security, stability, reconstruction and development.
