The scam has been running for years now. People are lured into exposing personal details and the scammer logs into their accounts for a second phase which will typically be to send money-soliciting mails t addresses in the address book. Surprisingly, both phases still have a rate of success. Just bear in mind that no service provider would ever ask you such details and that if your uncle or friend is robbed in a hotel somewhere all other contacts simply can't vanish leaving e-mail as the only way to communicate.
