Dar is growing and changing rapidly. Since the end of Ujamaa and the advent of the new liberalized economy, it has transformed itself into the hub of a developing capital city. As a result, a lot of what defined this Heaven of peace has had to give way to what is now affectionately referred to as Bongo. This book is a photographic record of what was while also celebrating what is, a love letter to both the old and the new and an attempt at giving permanence to a piece of the city that is constantly evolving.
The photos in this book aim to tell the story of contemporary Dar while at the same time reminding us of its former self. As a wise man once said, in this great future, you cannot forget your past.
