Tanzania is not, won`t ever
become a nation of animals

A few weeks ago, President Jakaya Kikwete cautioned East African Community (EAC) members against making odious statements due to their potential to sow seeds of divisions and quarrels amongst the five countries that are currently gunning for the re-creation of the EAC as an expanded regional integrative entity.

In a clear case of the Tanzanian leader’s caution being literally thrown to the winds, some of our friends in next-door Kenya, sheltering under cover of exercising freedom of expression enshrined in the constitutions of the two countries, have branded us a nation of animals plus a heaven of lazy people and criminals.

Why? Their twisted reasoning is that we are hosting Brazil at a very expensive cost instead of spending the money on fighting poverty. While it’s not our intention to defend the scheduled Taifa Stars–Brazil friendly tie, we feel obliged to strongly challenge the rash and galling article from our Kenyan brothers.

We strongly believe that everyone has fundamental rights to express one’s opinions, but in so doing, fairness and respect should prevail above all, in order to avoid the negative consequences that those kinds of reckless views are bound to cause.

We can confidently recall, without fear of contradiction, that one of the factors that led to the breakdown of the East African Community in 1977 was some abusive statements launched by our neighbours in Kenya against Tanzania, acting under the same umbrella of freedom of expression granted by the constitution.

They dubbed us “a man eat nothing society”, because they believed, and still do, that we are extremely poor to the extent that we can’t feed our people.

That highly insulting, dehumanising characterisation was highly publicised by the same media house that today claims to be at the forefront of promoting integration in the region, while deep into the bottom of their hearts, they have nothing to promote apart from personal hidden agenda.

Tanzanians retaliated by describing Kenya as a “man eat man society”, which was also highly publicised by our local media. Ultimately, things went out of control, in the wake of which hatred was created between the two countries.

Since that time, it is apparent that our brothers and sisters in the neighbouring country have not buried their behaviour of undermining Tanzanians.

To be honest, we don’t know why they undermine us so much to the extent of seeing us as a sub-standard species, whereas, in reality, we are just at the same level as far as living standards are concerned. They are neither in the developed world nor in the developing group or the famous G-20. As for living standards and the popular Gross Domestic Product measurement, we are better than those who believe they are rich while their economy is controlled and enjoyed by 500 individuals, while millions are entrapped in massive poverty.

Today, if GDP is used correctly, one might believe that Nigeria because of the booming oil revenues, is economically richer than the United Kingdom, but the reality is the extreme opposite.

Just last year, one of the Kenya’s premier daily newspaper published an article attacking Tanzanians; it was authored by a Kenyan who claimed to have been in the country for three days but was disappointed by the poor service offered by the hotel industry.

While the message was very clear, the language and tone used by the author was purely irritating and misleading – merely echoing the same old trend of undermining Tanzanians and their country. There are so many examples that can justify the old irresponsible behaviour of our brothers and sisters in this region.

This week, one Kenyan came up with another irritating statement when he used his constitutional rights, to express his disappointment about why Tanzanians are hosting Brazil in a friendly warm-up match, by paying what he described as ‘very expensive cost’ for the poor country like ours. In his opinion, this kind of ‘misuse’ of resources is what makes us very poor while Kenya is progressing in terms of economic development in the region as far as Gross Domestic Product is concerned.

He described Tanzanians as a party animals and funniest creatures. He also claimed that Julius Nyerere wasn’t Tanzanian but a Kenyan because he thought and acted bravely like millions of Kenyans.

He went further by describing Tanzanians as very lazy, criminals with poor education background, citing an example of a fellow Tanzanian who schooled with him in UK, but decided to quit his studies and joined the ring of car thieves .

He doesn’t see the reason for the poorer Tanzania to host Brazil at what he described as ‘very expensive cost’ and also offered us an advice that the money would have been used in alleviating poverty.

We have no records in our history that bar Tanzanians from enjoying whatever they believe in just because their country is very poor. It should be noted that the 2010 World Cup wasn’t just for South Africa, but also for the rest of Africa as well.

It’s for this reason that some countries have tried to use the opportunity to promote their football talents as well as marketing their country across the globe. At the end of the day, Brazil is not coming because they have been offered cash, but it’s part of their plans to warm up before the kickoff of the 2010 soccer bonanza next Friday.

For the record, it’s not the taxpayers’ money that has been spent on hosting Brazil, and therefore attacking the government as well as Tanzanians for not having priorities is missing the point as well as misleading the general public.

While our friend from Kenya might be correct about our current economic situation, the tone and language used was very irritating and unacceptable especially bearing in mind the uneasiness of Tanzanians about their counterparts from the Land of Nyayo, where the EAC is concerned.

Though there are thousands of Tanzanians who share the same abusive and irritating statement issued by our friend from Kenya, we at The Guardian on Sunday, are strongly against it, because it is in very bad taste and lacks a presence of mind and sense of responsibility.

Calling us a nation of animals or heaven of criminals is going beyond the freedom of expression granted by the constitution of both Tanzania and Kenya.

We have never been and will not be a nation of animals as our beloved brother wants the world to believe. Our history speaks louder about our integrity than the propaganda from our beloved Kenyan brother.

As a media house, we believe that if not stopped, this kind of irritating comment is one of the obstacles toward having a free and equitable integration, which we are trying to build after we failed in 1977.

While we strongly and humbly respect the fundamental rights of freedom of expression, we believe that when such opportunity is used irresponsibly, it causes more harm than the intended goodness.

Yes, it’s true that we are poor; it’s correct that in terms of GDP, Kenya is better than Tanzania, though the reality on the grounds might prove the opposite; It’s the truth that Kenya is at least a matured capitalist country compared to Tanzania, though we are also slowly and carelessly creating similar situation here; It’s true that we shall pay high cost to attend the Taifa Stars friendly game against the world’s best football team this Sunday.

But, what we can’t accept is the senseless and tasteless remarks from our brothers and sisters in one of our key partners. We understand that this is not the official stand of the government of Kenya or that of the majority of Kenyans, but in any downfall, it all starts with irresponsible acts of an individual, before it escalate to the majority.

Just because we are poor doesn’t mean we have sold our nationhood. It doesn’t mean we are a nation of animals or cradle of criminals. Despite all that, millions of Tanzanians are proud of their country as well as who they are in this region as well as in Africa, considering our historical background, solidarity and unity among us.

We would like to be corrected constructively and responsibly, because at the end of the day, the truth needs to be told. However in telling the truth or offering an advice, let’s be careful with what we write and say against each other.

We believe that in East Africa, the historical factors that unite us together are stronger than the obstacles that divide us as partners. We shall continue to support the efforts to integrate this region economically, socially and politically, but will not entertain any statements that undermines our nationhood and integrity that we have struggled to build during the past five decades.

Dear Guardian on sunday, nadhani ulikuwa na nia njema, lakini nadhani umekosea kidogo. You have dignified this gossip and useless comments with a response. Kama ingetolewa na official media au gezeti lolote..mngekuwa na hoja lakini hapa..naona mmeovereact.

In anycase, I love Kenyans and others in the region lakini naona sasa hawa jamaa wanajisahau. We can as well pull off the plugs and I dont think we shall lose to lose. Tuheshimiane na kupendana. Thats the only way we can move on as the region. Lets stop this cheap politicking.

Na I dont believe its ALL Kenyans with these negative atitudes towards we wabongo. Same in Tanzania there are some wabongo wako negative sana na Kenya. Nadhani tujifunze kuishi vyema kama majirani.

    Mwananchi mpenda EAC!

Tanzania Oyee, EAC Oyee! Udumu umoja wa EAC.

I have worked with the Kenyans and i am still working with them in the auditing firm, let make it clear to you Tanzanians, these people are not our friends and they can't even be, never!Sometimes you can never turn against the history. It will always repeat. They used to be like that, and insulting us is part of their life. It is clear to me that there is no East African Community under these differences we have. Tusilazimishe mambo huo utabaki ndio ukweli. I swear i will never forgive Diodoras Kamara and his associates if this EAC come to life again, cause we don't need it. We are doing business with China,India, Malaysia, USA, South Africa,Zambia,DRC and so so without any community, who can say that we will be successfully economically with EAC? Can any one tell me how e.g Industrial, agricultural, Political? I see no future under the community and from the bottom of my heart I HATE IT

I totally support the views in the Guardian's brilliant comments as well as brother Mashaka's eloquent (as usual) views above. (1)Our northern neighbours are getting really desperate now that our tourism sector has overtaken theirs. More and more people now know where East Africa's main tourist attractions are. So any futher efforts for us to advertise our beautiful country will be met with derision by our neighbours.
    (2) The Land Issue: We can't separate the land issue from the current cries and howls of those Kenyans who say that we are not good East Africans because we don't want to give them our land. The truth, however, is that THERE IS ENOUGH LAND IN KENYA FOR ALL KENYANS, BUT MOST OF IT IS OWNED BY A SMALL CLIQUE OF POLITICIANS, FOREIGN BILLIONAIRES AND MULTINATIONALS, THUS BANISHING THE MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE TO SLUMS AND SQUATTER CAMPS. The land issue contributed significantly to the savage and wanton bouts of TRIBAL violence as well as orgies of killing frenzy we saw in early 2008. (3) There is a weekly English-language newspaper published in Nairobi, inappropriately called 'The East African'. For the last ten years, 98% of its front page articles have been against Tanzania, clearly showing that there is already a media war going on north of our border (waged by at least a section of their media). (4)Lastly,we can have a viable EAC ONLY IF ALL OF US ARE PULLING IN THE SAME DIRECTION AND NOT WORKING AT CROSS-PURPOSE WITH INSINCERE ULTERIOR MOTIVES. MUNGU IBARIKI TANZANIA.

I studied in Kenya for over 3 years and I have a few best friends in Nairobi.

To be honest I didn't like the first impression I got from these people... they hate each other and not friendly at all!! miserable and ignorance are the best words to describe them. They only respect you when they realise you are better than them in class, business and in general lifestyle!

I hope the don't infect our country with this poisonous attitude.

I personally do not support EAC but I guess I will have to live with it. My friends in Nairobi are queuing to go buy land(kipande) in Arusha etc; very interesting enhee... I get asked daily if I could join them to start up a business in Dar - well thinking but I wonder where my fellow Tanzanians are???!!! let's wake up and overperform these creatures

After all, we are not sure who this so-called Kamau is. Hayo yanayozungumzwa na Kamau, whoever he may be, ni maoni yake binafsi na si msimamo rasmi wa Kenya kama nchi. Wadau wote tunaochangia humu tunapaswa kuelewa ukweli huu. I think this ill-advised reaction by The Guardian on Sunday will do plenty of damage to the newspaper’s credibility. Kamau’s comments are not a national issue to warrant strongly worded editorials in national newspapers. Ninachoweza kusema hapa ni kuwa mhariri alikurupuka.

Oh my god! Tanzanians are so easy to manipulate. What's purported to be Kamau's article was not a kenyan's article. The english used in that article is not of mainstream kenyans. Moreover, the original east africans (kenya, tanzania and uganda) don't have tendancy of putting tutsi in the picture. Therefore, that article was written by one of the Mashaka's friends for publicity stunt.

Thank you the real Tanzanian who can defend the national Interests as i do.The so called EAC i really discourage it because it will not be as some Tanzanians thinking.Closing here ask your self how far are we ready for the EAC??.
Coming to the present situation and this will be there will never stop except after war.Kenya's will always think they are above all East african countries no body will stop them just because it is their character.
My simple advice to my country and leaders if you are always after national interests this issue of EAC can wait even for ten year.Because I will never allow Tanzania to be the marketing place, rember we Tanzanian's we are not lazy as they say but we are FRIENDLY and this will cost the whole country.
Kenyans are running out of land, and they thing the only place to go and establish their settlements is Tanzania. This is not accepta let us not allow it.
Among the people who are against Tanzania in the world market is Kenyans, think clear what kind of community will be here for only Tanzania to support Kenyans???.Alot of products from Tanzania at the world market kenyans ended up rising very strong urgument the they dont meet the standards and were needed to be bunned.Imagine Tanzanight is from kenya and All Tananian National parks will be in Kenya immediatly after EAC.
The only important thing here is to forecast on the fact that our country need respect and the only way to gain our respect back is to throughout Kenyans believe it or not it will work very well.

Now we come again to the same issue of EAC which I blamed Tanzania leaders to drag us in this shit again. Are we not learnt from the mistake?

What we need is trade embargo to be lifted and nothing else, we don't need this EAC as I know it will cost us a lot of Money to run this ghost organisation.

Let stop it soon rather than later and run our country rather than countries.

Weather Ka-mau is real or not but this topic helps us to open a key dialogue.

We have been taken for a ride for too long to joined this union. The govt still doesn't tell us what to do, or how to prepare ourselves when the so called door is open for the union to start. We are just sitting here and wait. We have recently seen the speech form our neighbor's leader teaching his people on what to do when the thing is on. He is indirect telling them I fought so much for this so it is ur turn to go and harvest. We should long know the motivation of this union is not for our beneficial but for those who initiated. They are all after our land, our piece, a place to freely dump their goods. What do we have to sell to them Nothing...They are looking for free market or space to spread apart...They see we have so much money to spend but we Tanzanian should know better and boycott products that are not made in our country. WE SHOULD LOVE OUR COUNTRY AND KNOWINGLY THAT IF U BUY SOMETHING MADE IN THE COUNTRY YOU ARE HELPING SOMEONE TO PRODUCE MORE AND BY PRODUCING MORE WILL NEED TO HIRE MORE PEOPLE. The person who is hired could be ur son, sister etc...

I wish we could opted out for now and see how the union is doing in general before we agreed to join. I wonder who are those people just decided to go ahead and let it be.....I strongly believe a leader is appointed to work for the people and as we know the majority of the people refused this thing still they decided to join. Now when we see the chickens are coming home to roost we get supervised. It will be the same thing it didn't work then and won't do any good for us now but we now know better if the Govt doesn't work for us, let us help ourselves. Just boycott those products ..I do remember when we were little it was so hard to get margarine, flip flops etc etc but we lived through it...If we managed to eat what we had and live why not now..... Support your people and your country....
