While the meetings of the International Coffee Organizations are being held this week at the ICO Headquarters in London, Tanzania has joined the group of ICO members who have completed the ratification procedure for the new (ICA 2007) Agreement.
The instruments of ratification after being signed by the Tanzanian President, H.E Jakaya M. Kikwete, were presented by the Tanzania delegation to the ICO Executive Director Mr Nestor Osorio for depository at the short ceremony which was held at the ICO Secretariat.
Meanwhile, the ICO Executive Director Mr. Nestor Osorio has tabled his resignation letter to the Council for consideration after being appointed by President of Colombia to represent their country as Ambassador of Colombia to the United Nations in New York with effect from 1st November 2010.
Mr. Osorio was appointed to the post for five years from 1 March 2002 and after serving the Organization for five years, the Council at its Session in 2007 decided to extend his term for another five years to 30 September 2012.
Following this new development, it means Mr. Osorio has to terminate his term and the Council has subsequently approved as an interim arrangement, the Head of Operations Mr. Jose Sette to be an acting Executive Director of ICO from 1 November 2010 to 30 September 2011.
The International Coffee Council has meanwhile approved extension of the time for the signature to the ICA 2007 for another one year to allow other members after indicating the need for more time to complete the ratification procedures.
So far, a number of 27 countries representing 60.3% of the votes of exporting members have completed the necessary accession procedures. The minimum requirement for the new Agreement to come into force for exporting members requires two-third of the votes. On the other hand, three members representing 91.6% of the votes of importing members have completed the procedures, so only exporting members are being awaited for the new Agreement to come into force.
Tanzania is represented at the ICO meetings by Mr. Adolf Kumburu, the Managing director of Tanzania Coffee Board, Prof. James Terry, CEO of Tanzania Coffee Research Institute and Mr. Yuusf Kashangwa, Director of Tanzania Trade Centre, at the Tanzania high Commission in London

Hi kaka Michuzi. Naomba ufafanuzi kuhusu this agreement tuliyo-ratify. What does it even mean to an ordinary mkulima wa kahawa kule Kilimanjaro?
