Issues with Tanzanian football:-

I have reviewed issues currently facing football in Tanzania and here are but some of my observations.
Colonial legacy: Tanzania is a British colony and this is one of the reasons why its football never developed. The British did not help their colonies develop football in pre and post independence eras, with the exception of Ghana and Nigeria. Most English speaking countries in Africa have enjoyed very little success in football on continental level. The French on the other hand invested in countries like Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Mali, Senegal and also scouted these countries for talent who eventually where developed at French clubs.
Lack of Competition: Tanzania lacks a lot in terms of regional competitions that serve as a recruitment vehicle.
Lack of Investment: There has been very little investment in the game at Grassroots level. The Country has no football academies in the region and its league remains extremely underdeveloped.
Lack of scouting activity: Tanzanian enjoys no scouting activity at all. If a talented player emerges from Tanzania, they most often end up in the local leagues and hardly ever make it to Europe. This hugely affects the national team who often lack the experience of teams with European players in their ranks.
Michuzi,
ReplyDeleteWhat is more significant in football; winning the match, appearing at the event, or not making an appearance at all since you know that you will not win the game? East Africa in general, and Tanzania in particular, seem to have chosen the last option and for the last eight decades that FIFA has held the World Cup tournament none of the East African countries has ever featured. Not even as a guest. Ironically, we're probably one of the best football fans in Africa.
Our underachievement in football is a problem of historical neglect. Tanzania also suffers from lack of quality coaching and investment of football facilities. As a result, we are left with the consolation of watching the English Premier League and West African players, since we are not entertained by our own local football.
I don't think talent is the major problem. I believe we have potential players that can be discovered and relied upon to bring glory to our nation. However, talented players would be less committed due to poor remuneration, poor management, and inadequate facilities.
We need to accept the fact that we will never play standard football unless we tackles the many loop-holes we have refused to identify as problems requiring urgent attention. We're wasting enormous resources hiring foreign coaches and club managers that can’t change the situation or trying to recuperate what does not exist. We really need to consider seriously about revolutionising out football.
Kamata Njelekela of This Day wrote a good article about this problem especially in relation to Simba and Yanga. His article can be read here: http://www.thisday.co.tz/?l=10571 .

Pool of funds hii iendeshe mashindano mbalimbali, kwa mfano sio premier league ambayo tayari ina sponsor wake Vodacom, but other fringe competitions e.g reserves league, division one etc in England EPL ina Barclays, Division One ina Coca Cola etc
