By Zitto Kabwe
Last week the Parliamentary Public Organizations Accounts Committee (POAC) that I Chair embarked on our first week-long visit in accessing the state of the 3 Mega projects in Southern Tanzania that are being carried out by National Development Corporation (NDC).
We set off from Dar-es-Salaam and slept in Njombe town (expected capital of new Njombe Region. We drove to Ludewa then to Mchuchuma on to Liganga after that we set off to Ruvuma Region where we started off from Songea then to Ngaka Coal fields and we moved on to Mbeya Region to visit the last project which was Kiwira Coal Mine located in Ileje/Kyela districts.
On the way we encountered a number of problems that any typical Mwananchi comes across everyday. Our bus broke down (9 of us drove in one car from Iringa to Makambako), we had to contend with lack of accommodation in some places, in Ludewa for instance Hon. Deo Filikunjombe MP of parliament of the area and Vice-Chairman of POAC provided accommodation in his own house and housed MPs from other political parties which goes to show what a great country we live in.
In Mbeya we stayed in a work in progress hotel; some of the highlights of a very informative, exciting and thought provoking trip on how we can move forward these projects.
I presume Mh. Zitto writes and speak kiswahili. If his english as posted here is a reflection of our best i would worry more of the quality of our education than the unfounded assertions he makes about the perverseness of corruption in our country. Yes, there is corruption but often is scope is exaggerated by sweeping and reckless allegations prompted by ignorance or political machinations. As an MP I do not expect him to be as simplistic as he appears to be. Woe unto him and to our country! Mbona wepesi kuibomoa nchi yetu!
ReplyDeleteHon. Kabwe, these projects are supposed to have taken off way back. As recently as 2006, we were informed that the giant SIEMENS multinational was ready to invest in Liganga/ Mcuchuma.
ReplyDeleteOnly petty personal interests from autocrats have delayed this project. I suspect that SIEMENS would not fulfill certain "requirements" and thats how they got kicked out.
We look forward to the Chinesse making good on this mega project. We hope there will be a lot of quality employment opportunities for our people. We hope that thie time around, theer will not be too much politics on teh Power Purchase Agreement. Please keep PPA away from politicians and know-it-all average citizens, who do not understand teh concept of "Capacity Charging".
Hon. Kabwe, I am a bit saddened by your ascertion that the projects can satisfy TZ's needs for the next 150 years. This kind of thinking is very debilitating - Tanzania needs even more power than the envisaged 3GW - if not today, tomorrow
Lastly, HEP is still the cheapest and cleanest source of power. As we embark on teh thermal projects, please let us also do STEIGLER'S GORGE - which can on its own produce 3GW, at a capital cost of 1.2BUSD
Anon wa kwanza hapo juu nakubaliana nawe. Mhe. angeandika malalamiko yake kwa lugha yetu. Ama Ankal alimpa masharti?
ReplyDeleteSasa akiandika kiswahili wafadhili atawapataje?
We si ulienda kazini au ulienda vacation.
Sifaham sana kuhusu uzalishaji umeme maana sio field yangu ila naziamini kampuni za kichina. Hawaangalii watalala wapi wao wanapiga kazi.
Mhurumieni jamani lazima atumie kalugha ambako wafadhili wanaofutilia mambo ya kwetu wanaweza kuelewa na kumtambua. Nyinyi vipi?
We need more bold enough leaders to stand firmly agaisnt it... Tanzania is at the verge of becoming one of the top economies in Africa. Watanzania wa leo si wale wa miaka kumi iliyopita.. it's a new day and we need new ways of thinking to take us where we need to go.. kwa mafisadi... your days are numbered!!!
