The Kili Taifa Cup 2011 tournament has been launched in Dar es Salaam today.

The colourful launch that attracted various football stakeholders and the media fraternity was held at the Safari Pub within Tanzania Breweries Limited premises in Dar es Salaam.

This is the third time in a row that Kilimanjaro Premium lager is sponsoring Kili Taifa Cup but the fifth time that TBL is sponsoring the event, previously through its Safari Lager Brand.

This year’s tournament, with the theme ‘Taking Tanzania’s Soccer to Greater Heights’ is expected to kick off on May 7 at round stages and will take place in six earmarked centres.

The centres picked for this year include, Mwanza, Moshi, Dodoma, Dar es Salaam, Mbeya and Lindi. A total of 24 teams from various regions will take part in the tournament.

Speaking during the launch ceremony, the Tanzania Football Federation Secretary General, Angetile Oseah, lauded Kilimanjaro Premium Lager for being on the fore front to promote football in the country.

He said Kili Taifa Cup tournament has been a major source for spotting grass root talent from the regions and that the tournament has been growing from year to year, citing an example of last year’s finals that saw two teams from the regions, Singida and Lindi battling out for the top prize. Singida won the title.

“We have during the past been witnessing only Dar es Salaam teams but last year it was different as witnessed teams from the regions playing in the finals,” he said.

On his part, the TBL Marketing Director, David Minja, re- affirmed his company’s commitment through Kilimanjaro Premium Lager to sponsor the event saying it is one of the biggest football tournaments in the country that has been producing players for various prominent clubs in the country and the national team.

He said his company has pumped in over Tsh 800 million to the tournament that will last till end of May. The money will cater for the teams’ preparation, transport, accommodation and kits.

“We have been working closely with TFF to ensure that this tournament is a success and we believe that this year’s will be more exciting. We are calling on fans to turn up in big numbers to cheer their teams,” he said.

He said this year the prizes have been improved compared to last year as the winner will walk away with Tsh 40million.

The second place winners will get Tsh 20million while the third place will receive Tsh 10million.

Other prizes include Tsh 2 million for safe hands goal keeper, Tsh 2.5 million for the best scorer, Tsh 2million for the best coach, Tsh 2million for the best referee, Tsh 2million for the best referee and Tsh 2million as fair play award. After every match the man of the match will be announced and awarded tsh 100,000.

“TBL has long been associated with soccer and is excited about its renewed interest and sponsorship on soccer,” said Minja.
