The United States Agency for International Development's (USAID) Feed the Future team hosted a three-day semi-annual meeting of stakeholders at Mount Meru Hotel in Arusha which began November 28, 2011. Feed the Future is a United States Government initiative aimed at addressing global hunger and food security that supports country driven approaches to address the root causes of hunger and poverty, while seeking to improve nutrition.
Feed the Future is a Presidential Initiative focused on improving nutrition, especially for women and children; increasing production of maize, rice, and horticulture; working with smallholder farmers to increase production; and investing in infrastructure including irrigation and rural roads in order facilitate greater economic growth around the world.
The stakeholders meeting in Arusha brought together over 120 local agencies, Government of Tanzania representatives, private groups, and Feed the Future core partners who gave presentations addressing the successes, challenges, and goals of their programs. These presentations included information about the importance of women farmers, improved nutrition for children, innovative technology, policy and trade, as well as expanding involvement in the Southern Agriculture Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT), which is a focus region for the Feed the Future initiative.
