EXIM Bank Tanzania, led by the board of directors, will be leading a blood donation exercise on June 1st, 2012 at the bank’s headquarters that seeks to raise blood to supplement efforts by the Tanzania blood bank as the bank marks its 15th anniversary. Records indicate that Tanzania requires 400,000 bottles of safe blood per year but the target is not reached due to ignorance on the importance of donating blood.

A statement released by the Exim Bank Managing Director, Anthony Grant, stated Exim has called upon many other stakeholders to turn up in big numbers to join the vein-to-vein chain of blood donation, an exercise of which is geared towards the Bank’s theme of ‘Save a mother, Save a child campaign’ adding that this is in line with the Bank’s 15year celebration initiatives targeting the community.

“Exim Bank’s growing success of 15 years has been firmly rooted in the altruistic ideology of sustainable Corporate Social Responsibility. With hospitals falling short of blood supply in the country, the Bank has answered the National Blood Transfusion Services (NBTS) call to organize a blood donation drive at the Exim Tower grounds, where Members of the Board, Management and Staff will participate in this exercise. Moreso, this is the second time the Bank is doing this as the same was carried out in 2011 where we will carry in the same spirit, although this year we have extended our arm of reach through the support of our business associates and suppliers who have been kind and touched about this need and will be with us on 1st of June 2012. It goes without say that ‘a friend in need is a friend in deed’

He further noted mothers and children have been victims to insufficient safe bloody supplies in Tanzania where we keep witnessing or hear of increasing loss of life cases for expectant mothers during labor and the Bank’s participation is not only to contribute but also to raise awareness of the need for safe blood donation. The Vein – to – vein chain is hoped to save lives of many.

The 2012 World Blood Donor Day campaign runs under the theme  “Every blood donor is a hero” that focuses on the idea that every one of us can become a hero by giving blood while recognizing the silent and unsung heroes who save lives every day through their blood donations. The theme also strongly encourages more people all over the world to donate blood voluntarily and regularly. The goal of the World Health Organization (WHO) is for all countries to obtain their blood supplies entirely from voluntary unpaid donors by 2020.

Exim Bank is the only Tanzanian member Bank at the Global Banking Alliance (GBA) where members share best practices to spur growth and accelerate development impact for women in business. Exim Bank goes further capitalizes in investing in women differently – blood donation to save their life, is one of them.
