On August 1, Regional English Language Officer Rebecca Smoak welcomed three Tanzanian teachers selected for participation in the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program prior to their departure for the U.S. They were Paul Kinunda, Bowling Green State University, Ohio; Lugiko Lugiko, Michigan State University, Michigan; and Innocent Julius Materu, Southern University and A & M College, Louisiana. Ms. Smoak congratulated them on their selection to the program and noted:
"The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the American people through the U.S. Department of State to promote academic exchanges and education worldwide. You will serve as cultural ambassadors for Tanzania and promote Kiswahili language learning in the U.S., which signifies Tanzania's and East Africa's growing importance in the world.
" Teaching Assistants are selected through the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board in the United States. The program aims to strengthen U.S. foreign language instruction and promote mutual understanding by establishing a foreign language native speaker expertise on U.S. campuses. For additional information on the program, please see the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam's website at: http://tanzania.usembassy.gov/flta.html.
