On Monday, July 8 2013, United States Ambassador to Tanzania Alfonso E. Lenhardt dedicated the opening of the Kigamboni Boat Ramp at the Tanzania Peoples Defense Force (TPDF) Kigamboni Naval Base with TPDF Brigadier General Abdullah Mwemjudi. The recently completed boat ramp will strengthen the Tanzanian maritime security capabilities to protect its harbor, combat piracy, smuggling, and terrorist threats.
The boat ramp worth $415,000 (Tsh672,715,000) is for the sole use of the TPDF maritime assets and was built at the request of the TPDF. Construction was performed by units from the United States military, including Underwater Construction Team 1, members of Navy Mobile Construction Battalion 4 from Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa Djibouti (CJTF-HOA), and soldiers of the Tanzanian Peoples Defense Force.
In his remarks at the opening of boat ramp dedication, Ambassador Lenhardt noted, "Two of the key areas necessary to promote development in Tanzania, or any nation with seashores or lakes, are the capabilities to make waters safer for trade, tourism, and recreation, and to protect citizens from the threats of piracy, illegal fishing, drug and human trafficking, and other challenges that are faced by East Africa as well as the world at large."
The ramp construction demonstrates continued partnership between the United States and Tanzania. Previous contributions include donations of patrol boats, equipment and training to Tanzanian military and police. The ramp will enable the Tanzanian navy to effectively launch and recover small coastal craft at high and low tide. It shows a constant cooperation between the American and Tanzanian people in the Maritime Security Program.
United States maritime security programs are part of overall United States government assistance to Tanzania of over $750 million (Tsh1.2trillion).
