Kenya Port Authority (KPA) is losing business to rival Dar es Salaam port as delay in cargo clearance in Mombasa prompts traders from neighbouring countries to turn to Tanzania.
Data from KPA shows that the Mombasa port handled 18.9 per cent less or 552,449 tonnes of cargo from Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda and the DRC in the nine months to September.
As a result, the port relied on Uganda and South Sudan—that have little choice on their logistic corridor—to grow its export cargo volumes to 3.9 million tonnes in the nine months compared to 3.8 million tonnes in the same period last year.
Shippers attribute the trend to the shorter period it takes to transport cargo from the port of Dar es Salaam compared to Mombasa which is facing congestion that has seen transporters take more than a month to reach Rwanda from three weeks.
“We are losing business to Tanzania because of inefficiency at the port,” said Gerald Kagumo, the vice chairman of East Africa Freight Forwarders Association.

ReplyDeleteHapo tatizo watanzania lazima tuelewe uhamuzi wa Uganda na Rwanda na Kenya kushirikiana kutumia bandari ya Dar Es Salaam ni uhamuzi wa kisiasa na wala sio sababu ya walio zitoa kwamba rushwa na urasimu katika bandari yetu as we know hatuwafikii kenya hata kidogo kwa rushwa na ni miongoni mwa nchi zinazoongoza rushwa duniani na na uhakika kwamba if there is any difference kuhusu huduma za bandari ya Dar na Mombasa ni very slight difference na hiyo tofauti haiwezi kufanya mtu kuamua kubadili mwnenndo wa biashara kama Rwanda na Uganda walivyofanya, ni uhamuzi wa kisiasa hiyo ndio imani yangu, na kama mtakumbuka Kagame anajua kwamba Tanzania inanufaika au ingenufaika sana kwa matumiza ya bandari yake mpaka akasema angepewa kuingoza bandari ya Dar angeweza kulisha Tanzania na mara nyingine akasema kwamba "I will wait and hit him(kikwete) at the right place and time" alikuwa amaanishi kivita bali ni vitu kama hivi kiuchumi ambavyo i dont think kama atafanikiwa kwa kiasi kikubwa.
ReplyDeletePia ukiangalia decisions zao hawa jamaa sio za kiuchumi kwanza kutumia bandari ya mombasa kusafirisha mizigo mpaka Rwanda ni ukichaa na kuicha bandari ya tanga au dar ukizingatia umbali uliopo,maana Uganda hapo hakuna kilichobadilika kuanzia mwanzo alikuwa anatumia sana bandari ya mombasa kuliko dar which inaeleweka kwa ukaribu uliopo inaleta mantiki,mkenya hapo atakuwa mnufaika wa mpango mzima na Rwanda ndio na Tanzania ndio losers!!
Huyu Kagame kutumia bandari ya mombasa kupitishia mizigo yake ni anacheza karata maana huyu jamaa ni mzee wa kulikoroga mara nyingi anagombana na Uganda ambaye ndio anategemea kupitisha mizigo yake ikitokea mombasa kupitia Uganda.
ReplyDeleteinaonekana huyu jamaa kagame maamuzi aliyoyachukua kutumia bandari ya mombas ni uhamuzi wa kisiasa na sio kiuchumi,maana ndugu zetu kenya ni more corrupt kuliko Tanzania na sio BIG difference kuhusu hizi bandari mbili kusema ukweli ...hawa jamaa watarudi penda wasipende!
watanzania haina haja ya kuhumiza kichwa kwanza ni mizigo ya serikali tuu ya nchi hizo ndio zitatumia bandari ya mombasa, lakin watu binafsi kutoka nchi hizo wan uhuru wa kutumia bandari yoyote wanayotaka ambayo wanaona ina manufaa na kiabashara ni profitable kwao kutumia.

Hizi taarifa wala si za kufurahia maana hapo bandarini kwenyewe bado kuna taarifa kibao za utata, na ni kweli zenye kuchanganya, nchi mbili zimeomba kujitoa kupitisha mizigo yao, vilevile kiwango cha kontena zinazopita hakilingani na mapato/ingizo kwa mujibu wa vyanzo vya habari.
