The State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) will host the International Symposium with
the main theme "History of Islamic Civilization in East Africa" from 2nd - 4th
September, 2013. The venue will be at La Gemma Della Est Nungwi in North region,
Unguja. All arrangements for the Symposium were done between the Omani
government and the government of Zanzibar.
His Excellency Dr. Ali Mohamed Shein, the President of Zanzibar and the Chairman
of the Revolutionary Council will preside the opening ceremony while His Excellency
Dr. Mohammed Gharib Bilal, the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania
will be the Guest of Honour during the closing day.
The main organizer of the Symposium is the National Records and Archives
Authority (NRAA) of the Sultanate of Oman in collaboration with the Research
Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture in Istanbul (IRCICA) and the State
University of Zanzibar.
Over 50 working papers will be presented by researchers to highlight the major
manifestations of the Islamic civilization in various fields as well as reviewing
viewpoints related to the impact of Islamic civilization in Asia and East Africa
through the historic and Islamic civilization dimensions in addition to the Arab and
Islamic migrations and their impact on rapprochement of Islamic creeds.
The Symposium will also shed light on the impact of the Islamic civilization in
construction and craft industries, in addition to reviewing the geographic aspects that
contributed in spreading the Islamic civilization.
Besides the presence of His Excellency Hamed bin Mohammed Al Rashdi, the Minister
of Information of the Sultanate of Oman, other senior government(s) executives,
prominent historians and intellectuals, the Symposium will be attended by 170
participants from 18 nations including Oman, Kenya, Burundi, Britain, Comoros,
Tunisia, Yemen and Lebanon. Others are Turkey, Algeria, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Iraq,
Uganda, Egypt, India and Germany.
