Really. Tony is of the ages. What a loss. He was a great friend when I worked with him. Banyan I used to call him, much as he was not one.
Tony worked in advertising and many a times he would come over to Editorial to ask me look at some copies and do a re-write. He was quite hard self motivated chap whose bald was iconic to the display of the advertising pages.
Even when I left the Daily News, I still worked with him because my new employer was ad erasing quite a lot and sometimes we would need to put a notice for something after the pages are closed.
And even when again he too left he Daily News we continued th e association and did a few ads with his own company, by then in partnership with my friend Mikidad Mahamoud, the legendary radio broadcaster turned politician.
And socially, Tony was everywhere charming people and if you never met him at a party, you should know how good he was with charanga.
It is so sad I am not around there to celebrate his promotion to glory, but let all the family know that our sympathies are with them and as a catholic, the Prayers too.

Tony was more than a co-worker and my boss at the Daily News. He was a friend who made me. I thought he was having all the fun being my boss until I took over from him. He will always be remembered for his understanding and the leadership qualities. Never angry but aggressive in what he believed in.
ReplyDeleteI vividly remembered the day Printpak locked out Daily News. He engineered that we operate from our distribution department. The most outstanding thing he did was securing a bowl of rice from a nearby hotel (Mawenzi) as a substitute for glue required for pasting ads! Suddenly I had no arguments. He was that kind of man.
May the Almighty rest his soul in eternal peace. Amen.
