Honourable Hawa Ghasia - Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office for Regional Admin and Local Government during a demonstration in a mobile laboratory donated by BG Tanzania in Mtwara. |
BG Tanzania has donated 13 mobile laboratories to the Mtwara District Council to a tune of USD 50,000. The laboratories have the capacity to positively impact 910 secondary school students in the Mtwara rural district council.
Speaking at the donation event, Honourable Hawa Ghasia - Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office for Regional Admin and Local Government who was a Guest of honour at the event commended efforts of BG Tanzania to boost science education in secondary schools.
''This support comes at an opportune time, given that our schools have been doing poorly in science related subjects not because students don't have the capacity to understand science subjects, but because they have not been exposed to science related practicals due to unavailability of equipment. I ask the District Education officer and District executive Director to ensure that, those mobile laboratories are properly maintained all the time”, said honorable Ghasia.
BG Tanzania Head of Policy and Corporate Affairs Fred Kibodya said, "BG Tanzania is committed to improving education and hence facilitating capacity building initiatives in the southern coastal regions. These mobile laboratories will enable students to increase their capacity to learn by performing practical scientific tests, and ensure that logistical limitations, such as mobility and electricity, do not prevent students from conducting scientific experiments ".
The mobile laboratories are manufactured in Tanzania, and have the ability to be moved from classroom to classroom. Additionally, the laboratories are equipped with solar panels, which produce power to support students while using the equipment and conducting scientific tests.
BG Tanzania has been working closely with the Government of Tanzania to build capacity in the sciences through providing scholarships to Tanzanians studying in UK universities and Tanzania universities. The company has also partnered with Vocational Education Tanzania Authority (VETA) in establishing trainings for youth in the gas and oil related fields.
