On Wednesday, February 19 and on behalf of the American People, Resident Country Director of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) in Tanzania Karl Fickenscher officially handed over 14 Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (“MEWPs”) to TANESCO Managing Director Engineer Felschesmi Mramba at TANESCO Headquarters in Ubungo.
Senior representatives from the Millennium Challenge Account – Tanzania (MCA-Tanzania) also participated in the event. MCC provided approximately $206 million to support the development of Tanzania’s energy sector.
The MCC’s technical assistance package also included a $3 million contract to provide TANESCO with 14 truck-mounted, 13.5m insulated MEWPs, plus training of the operational personnel on the use and maintenance of the new trucks and equipment.
According to MCC Resident Country Director Karl Fickenscher, “These trucks and their newly trained crews will enable TANESCO to more safely and effectively maintain and repair the overhead electric wires, transformers, fittings, poles and cables that together constitute the new transmission and distribution lines, either in on or off road locations throughout the country.”
Additional projects that comprise MCC’s assistance to the power sector include: the new 100 megawatt submarine power cable from the mainland to Zanzibar, inaugurated in April 2013; approximately 2,700 kilometers of new or rehabilitated distribution lines; and 27 new or upgraded substations and other power infrastructure throughout the regions of Dodoma, Iringa, Kigoma, Mbeya, Morogoro, Mwanza and Kigoma.
The MCC Compact also funded the largest solar project to date in Tanzania to expand renewable power generation for public, commercial and household users. As a result of these projects, an estimated 1.4 million Tanzanians will receive electricity for the first time.
MCC also provided more than $15.25 million in technical assistance to both TANESCO and ZECO. The goal of the program was to help both utilities to improve on their respective institutional capacities and thereby improve power quality and reliability and reduce power outages.
In addition to the MCC Energy Projects, MCC Tanzania Compact I included significant assistance to the transport and water sectors. Over 434 kilometers of trunk roads have been upgraded to tarmac; an additional 35 kilometers of upgraded rural roads on Pemba; and a new runway for the airport on Mafia Island.
Under the MCC Water project, water treatment facilities in Morogoro and Lower Ruvu have been upgraded as well. A total of $698.1 million in U.S. assistance was provided under the MCC Compact between through September 2013.
