According to the Chairperson of the Organizing Committee, Hon. Jesca Eriyo who is the EAC Deputy Secretary General in charge of Productive and Social Sectors, “the overall objective to take part in the commemoration of the Rwanda Genocide is for the EAC to stand united in solidarity with the government and people of Rwanda in commemorating the 20th Anniversary against the Tutsi; and to promote a culture of tolerance and peaceful co-existence in the East African region”.
She said the theme EAC has chosen for the commemoration is; United for Solidarity and Peaceful co-existence. The choice of the theme is based on the EAC’s desire to show solidarity with the people of Rwanda during this period of grief and promote the fundamental principles of peaceful co-existence and good neighbourliness and peaceful settlements of disputes enshrined in the EAC Treaty and the Common Market Protocol.
She disclosed that the former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E Benjamin William Mkapa is expected to be the Guest of Honor.
According to the programme released this morning (attached), Commemorators are expected to arrive at the EAC Headquarters by 9am. The activities for the day include lighting of the commemorative flame; Walk to remember by Commemorators around designated Arusha Streets; Genocide Exhibitions; Documentary/movie shows; Public lectures on Genocide; and Memorial Songs/testimonies.
The commemoration will be crowned in the evening by holding a Vigil and Bonfire at the EAC headquarters Lawns from 19.30hrs to 23.00hrs. The vigil will be characterized by Speeches, Genocide Documentary movies and personal testimonies on big screens.
All EAC staff of the Organs and Institutions; the Rwanda High Commission to Tanzania; the Rwandan Community in Arusha and Tanzania; Representatives of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR); Representatives of the African Court for Human and People’s Rights; EAC Youth Ambassadors; and Representatives of the Arusha Local Council are expected to participate in the commemoration.
