Senior officials of the Arusha-based United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (UN-ICTR) last week visited Kigali, Rwanda to bid farewell to the people and Government of Rwanda, the diplomatic community and other stakeholders who have supported the work of the Tribunal in its 21 years of operation. The Tribunal will be closing its doors on 31 December 2015.
During its duration the ICTR indicted a t total of 93 individuals for the crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in the territory of Rwanda in 1994.It arrested 83 of them whose cases have now been completed. One individual died before arrest and 9 others are yet to be arrested. The UN Security Council has established the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT) which will pursue the fugitives.
