DAR ES SALAAM, Thursday, 7 April 2016 –  Since the first race was held in 2001, the Dar es Salaam Charity Goat Races have raised over 1 billion shillings for local charities, and in their 16th year are on track to continue raising funds.
The 2016 Dar es Salaam Charity Goat Races will take place from noon, on Saturday, 10 September at The Green on Kenyatta Drive.
Dar es Salaam Charity Goat Races Committee Co-Chair, Rachel Carlin, says the continued support the Goat Races receives from the community is invaluable.
„Each year we are able to put on this event because of the support from a number of sponsors and of course the people who attend the event,‟ she said.
„And with the date set, we are encoring people and organisations to become a goat owner for the day.
„Owning a goat is a lot of fun, especially if it wins; but it is also a good way to get behind the races and help us raise money,‟ Ms Carlin added.
With goat numbers limited, prospective owners are encouraged to visit the website and download a form to avoid disappointment.
For those wanting to don a costume and try their luck in the fancy dress parade, the theme for this year‟s Goat Races – A Day At The Races – provides plenty of inspiration. The theme is open to various interpretations which promises it to be a fun and colourful event
„While it is all a bit of fun, the reason we organise this event each year is to raise funds for local charities, so I also request any registered Tanzanian charity to visit our website and download an application form,‟ Janine Deetlefs Committee Co-Chair said.
Help2kids is an NGO that focuses on vulnerable children’s educational needs, providing them with the necessary resources to continue their primary and secondary education.
“The Dar es Salaam Charity Goat Races enabled help2kids to finally complete their goal of creating a sanitation block at our partnered Primary school,” remarked Justine LeDonne, Field Manager at Help2kids.
“The Goat Race charity provides both small and large organizations like ours to improve upon current projects in Dar es Salaam. With every-day running costs a priority in the efficiency of small NGOs, making large improvements on current projects can get pushed aside for years without the proper funding. The Goat Races enables those ideas and projects to come to light,” she further remarked.
A volunteer committee organizes the Dar es Salaam Charity Goat Races, and many other volunteers lend a hand on the day.
„At the end of the day, the goat races wouldn‟t happen if it wasn‟t for the sponsors, and as always a large number of organizations have come out to support the races in 2016.
„I would particularly like to acknowledge the support of our race sponsors: Southern Sun Hotel, Tanzanian Breweries Limited, Coca-Cola (Kwanza), Tigo, Stanbic Bann, Toyota Tanzania and Regent Tanzania Limited as well as SWISS and Continental Outdoor.‟ Ms Deetlefs concluded.

Those interested in buying a goat, or helping out on the day are encouraged to contact the Dar es Salaam Charity Goat Races.
