PRESIDENT BUSH: I'm really pleased to be standing with a really good friend of the American people and a great leader in Africa, President Kikwete of Tanzania. I just -- first of all, I'd like to announce that he's coming to visit in late August. I'm really looking forward to having you to the White House; looking forward to giving you a good dinner. And we'll have a good visit.
ReplyDeletePRESIDENT KIKWETE: Looking forward.
PRESIDENT BUSH: Yes. One of the things that's so impressive about his leadership in Tanzania is that the help of the American people is effective help, measurable in the number of people whose lives are being saved, babies are being helped with malaria. I mean, it's just unbelievable the job you've done there. And we're excited to welcome you to the country. I really want the American people to hear firsthand how successful their generosity has been, whether it be on HIV/AIDS or malaria. And Tanzania is a good example. But this success would not have taken place without your leadership, really important.
The other thing we discussed in the -- we discussed a lot of issues with the African leaders here in the G8, but one, of course, was Zimbabwe. You know, I care deeply about the people of Zimbabwe. I am extremely disappointed in the elections, which I labeled a "sham" election. And we, of course, listened very carefully. And President Kikwete, as the head of the AU, has been very involved in this issue. I'm not going to put words in his mouth, he can express his own self, but it was -- this issue of Zimbabwe took a fair amount of time --
PRESIDENT KIKWETE: It did, it did.
PRESIDENT BUSH: -- and rightly so. Anyway, thank you for agreeing to come to the States, and I'm really looking forward to having you.
PRESIDENT KIKWETE: President, let me thank you for the invitation. I'm really looking forward, too. We enjoyed your visit there. I think I've been around for some time. I think one -- that was one of Tanzania's biggest visits.
PRESIDENT BUSH: Thank you.
PRESIDENT KIKWETE: You saw how people came out into the streets to receive you. It's a measure of our appreciation of what the people of the United States have done to apply assist us in many things. Many lives have been saved through those programs in support of malaria, or to HIV/AIDS, but there are so many other programs that are building our -- capacity of our people to measure -- to marry their own development, which we highly appreciate.
Well, of course we see eye-to-eye on many international issues. Of course we have discussed the issue of Zimbabwe, where we understand your concerns. But I want to assure you that the concerns that you have expressed are indeed the concerns of many of us in the African continent. At the last summit of the African Union, many leaders expressed their dissatisfaction at the way things happened. But also we agreed on the way forward.
The only area that we may differ is on the way forward. You see differently, but for us in Africa we see differently. But I think again, there is still room for us for discussions. We are saying no party can govern alone in Zimbabwe, and therefore the parties have to work together to come up to -- to come out, work together, in a government, and then look at the future of their country together.
So this is the way we see it. I don't think there is much, the divergence there. You would have liked to see us do a bit -- some things, we would have liked to see you do some things. But we'll continue to discuss all these issues, and as friends at the end of the day we'll come to an understanding.
PRESIDENT BUSH: Thank you, sir. Looking forward to having you in Washington.
PRESIDENT KIKWETE: Thank you.
PRESIDENT BUSH: Some of these very same people will be there yelling questions there at the press conference
JUZIJUZI ALIKUWA NI RAFIKI WA PUTIN SASA HIVI AMESHAHAMIA GEORGIA BE CAREFULLL. NYERERE ALIIKATAA MAREKANI WAKIKUCHENJIA UTATIA AKILI
ReplyDeleteI am not paranoid, nor do I believe in conspiracy theories, but this US's newfound interest in Tanzania makes me wonder. A few years ago you could argue that even the Secretary of State could not point Tanzania out on the world map; we were virtually non-existent to them.
ReplyDeleteWith the current energy crisis hitting the world and even becoming a central theme in the ongoing presidential campaign in the US, it makes me concerned that these guys may have ulterior motives (well, they always do).
We have natural gas from Songosongo and Mnazi Bay; oil exploration is on the way and not forgetting Uranium deposits...
ANSWER TO NALITOLELA,...!
Unapenda kuiona marekani inatumia mi pesa pale mnapokuwa kwenye issue tu?
ReplyDeleteOkay, umeniita mjinga na mbumbumbu, but if you are as smart and as educated as you claim to be, you would realize that all the countries you've mentioned here have something to offer the US. Just to mention a few...
Israel - Key ally to the US in the middle east in "the fight against terror". (note the quotation marks). These two countries share a lot of common enemies. The way in which the nation of Israel came into being in what was formerly Palestine does not stand well with some powerful Arabic states and they have vowed to wipe out Israel, given the chance.
Saudi Arabia - the US has bases there. That is one of the main reason why Islamic radicals hate the US - they are angry at the presence of military bases in a land they consider holly.
South Korea - Well, if you know the history of the Korean war and if you know the current relations between N. Korea and the US (remember the 3 countries that Bush coined to be the "axis of evil"). Well, there is your answer to why S. Korea and US are such good buddies.
Georgia - do you know that the US has troops in Georgia since 2002 and they decided 4 years ago to make their presence their there permanent. By the way, you know the recent Georgia-Russia conflict, if you follow world events, this thing has been a long time coming. So the US gave Georgia a guarantee to protect them against Russia, in return they get to establish military presence in a country which is in proximity to the middle east. In addition, Georgia supports the US in Iraq. You might find this article enlightening: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/3406941.stm
By the way, the US has never fully really trusted Russia. Having a political and military ally right next door is their best bet in keeping things over there in check.

ReplyDeleteit is naive to believe this new-found friendship is just about PEPFAR and Bush's legacy, solely based on the fact that "Bush said so".
We don't know for sure what the Americans are up to; it could be the oil/minerals; it could be new naval bases in Africa, or you could be right, and it could just be that they are doing this out of pure goodness of their hearts, although frankly, I wouldn't bet my mortgage on it. However, being the smart person you claim to be, you should learn to not take everything at face value and scrutinize whatever you hear. (especially if the person who's saying it is Bush and his administration. Seriously, this is the administration that is/was made up of people like Cheney, Rumsfeld, Scooter Libby, Karl Rove, Antonio Gonzales, Scott McClellan). Remember the Iraqi WMDs story?
With an all-time low approval rating of below 30%; the credit-crunch; housing crisis; recession and soaring oil and food prices; rising unemployment rate, etc. I doubt Bush expects to leave a legacy by helping Africa fight the HIV/AIDS pandemic; at least not amongst US citizens. With them worrying about the aforementioned nightmares, not to mention the fact that it's election season, the American citizens could care least about what Bush does in Africa (not that they did much before). You could argue that maybe his aim is leaving a legacy amongst the international community; well in that is the case, I am pretty sure the US's failed foreign policy in the last 8 years is going to overshadow whatever attempts to clean his image that Bush may make on other fronts.
I doubt even FOX News (or should I say Faux News/Hoax News), which has been the GOP's propaganda machine would believe the Bush legacy b.s.
PEPFAR has been there for 5 years now, without Tanzania receiving that much personal attention from Bush himself till now. What tangible effects have been realized since the inception of PEPFAR; and how much more does Bush expect to achieve in the remaining 4 months of his tenure?
In the end, no one denies we will benefit a lot from the friendship with the US. But how much more we will give up in the long term. Nothing is for free in this world Mr. Zamoyoni, a smart person as yourself ought to know. No country (not just the US, even China, Norway, Netherlands, etc) just gives aids for free. There is always an ulterior motive. The question is, what is it.
If you know your history, you will remember that even our forefathers were lured into selling their lands to colonialists for signing bogus treaties and receiving much less in return. It's embarrassing to see you jumping at this so joyfully, Mr. Zamoyoni and praise your "Mzee wa DC" for his kindheartedness and wanting to help us miserable Tanzanians raise our standard of life from 46 to 55.
Attn:Nalitolela!
ReplyDeleteThe problem here ya were kind of paranoid that US is looking for something from our poor TZ but you forgot that our popular and Tz icon Jakaya is pushing so hard to be as close as he can get from this Man of Washington! I am 100% sure Washington does not push friendship from our country but they do so because if they can get TZ closer then there is a big chance it can help them in the war on terror especially if ya look many countries there are fighting oneanother and countries like Somalia is very dangerous to US and its interest and if you remember what happen to their embassies in TZ and Kenya then you will know how much Washington is serious and would like Partner like Kikwete and his country, but remember in Africa there are few Kikwetes many are just like Kibaki and Mugabe, and top of that Kikwete is Chairman of all African Countries a very powerful position in Africa. So perhaps by mention all that to you I ponder you understand why this Powerful CEO from Washington is pay so much attention to our poor nation but very friendly country in africa. Again sorry for calling you mbumbumbu you look like you know something especially in your second email.
you seem to have quite an admiration for Mr. Kichaka, Zamoyoni. Sadly, in my humble opinion, your admiration is highly misplaced. Like I told you before... the whole "help Africa" thing is just BS and I doubt even Bill O'Reilly would bight on that.
ReplyDeleteI am not just jumping on a "Bush is evil" bandwagon. But come on, if you have read former WH press secretary McClellan's book or at least listened to any of his interviews recently, you would think twice before trusting the man who, even the dumbest of Americans looks at with a suspicious eye. And that says a lot (if you know how dumb Americans are).
The mentioning of oil/natural gas/Uranium in my initial post was just an example. Whatever the motives behind US's friendship are, be sure that in the end the US will come out of it with a much bigger chunk than Tanzania. And once you are of no use to them, the US will dispose you off like a lepper in medieval times.
Don't be blind in worship of the "powerful Washington CEO" look at the real picture. From the examples you gave of countries with whom the US has forged close ties "without wanting anything in return", I gathered that you need to seriously get yourself acquainted with current world issues and international relations. So Zamoyoni, you really need to "wake up yoyo boy!"
haha, huyu kilaza anayejiita Zamoyoni pungazeze kweli. Tuulize sisi tunayemjua Peter Nalitolela tukupe wasifu wake.
You are so stupid kwakweli. Nox zimekukandamiza kichwa hadi Ubongo umetindia eh?
Kwanza uandishi wako inaonesha dhahiri kuwa elimu yako ndogo mno. 'Kiinglish' kibovu. Angalia sentensi kama "if ya look many countries there are fighting oneanother and countries like Somalia is very dangerous to US", "would like Partner like Kikwete" na "this Powerful CEO from Washington is pay so much attention to our poor" Kiswahiili pia kinakushinda. vyandalua (vyandarua), maalubino (maalbino from Englis word Albino), Ajari (Ajali), angarau (angalau).
Alaa!! You are embarassing.
kuna msemo unosema bure ghali.langu jicho tu!
By the way
Mbona kenya hawajui kiswahili JE KENYA NI MBUMBUMBU? Uganda Hawajui kiswahili JE NI MBUMBUMBU? kila panapo kuwepo na mjadala kila mtu anaongea anavyo jua lakini at the end of the day huo ni mjadala tu.
