I feel obliged to contribute to the debate Mashaka has come up with. Here is my contribution.
I acknowledge and praise Mashaka for coming up with a debate on the issue which is real, tangible and touches almost all Tanzanians.

I feel obliged to contribute to the debate Mashaka has come up with. Here is my contribution.
I acknowledge and praise Mashaka for coming up with a debate on the issue which is real, tangible and touches almost all Tanzanians.
The initiator of the debate tried well to list some (if not all) alternative economic activities that Tanzania can exploit to get rid of the miserable situations we had (have) sometimes even before independence up to the moment. Mashaka has raised his voice in search for common solutions but may be with different approaches and views to our problems.
My thinking is that Mashaka did not aim at "attacking", "offending" or "blaming" anyone (individual, institutions, government). Some examples might a bit go astray, a thing common to many authors/speakers. Mashaka has also shown his concern on the diversification of the economy, which is a very good thing and "many" (please do not ask for numbers or references!) people has advocated it.
One problem which I see in the course of the debate is a common understanding of the term agriculture. It is important to have a shared meaning of agriculture. Agriculture might mean different things to different people hence even the debate difficult to be comprehended among contributors. Did mashaka mean Tanzania can survive without "urban agriculture", "subsistence agriculture", "large scale agriculture" "pastoralism" etc etc.
Another issue which I would like to contribute is the use of the terms "from dependence to independence". The way the words are used reflect the theme of the debate, but a reader might be confused. One may think that agriculture is a problem to be free from.
However, agriculture is not a problem at all. The problem might be the degree of dependence on it and how it is handled in the country in question. May be "from total dependence to independence" could suffice. Still, the problem will be there as we are not totally dependent on agriculture.
Tanzania cannot and will never survive without agriculture (broadly defined) basing on the truth that around 80% of Tanzanians depend on it and it is out of my knowledge that there is a country in the world that has survived or survive without Agriculture. What Tanzania can and might dare to do is to transform its agriculture which is now politically named and pledged as "Mapinduzi ya Kijani" a translation from "Green revolution!" To achieve this, various enabling conditions need to be in place.
These will include appropriate and adequate budgetary allocations (subsidies very important), political will and commitment, legal support, multi-sectoral linkages (for example industrialization, infrastructure etc etc), human capital production, use and motivation (including extension officers), markets, irrigation schemes, application of science and technology in the production and marketization processes, storage facilities and control of pesticides and herbicides to mention but a few.

The fact of the matter is that tourism is ahead of agriculture and it is about 3 times as much as agriculture. This was revealed back in about the 2nd quarter of 2008 by the Governor of BOT.
Mashaka knows he did not exercise dues diligence in his article and I am ready to challenge it.
Mashaka claims to be a man of humility while calling Chavez an arrogant man!! He wants us to refrain from politics while he himself is being overly political. He claims to know what the Govt should do by saying exactly what the Govt is doing.
A person who does not know the leading sector of Tanzanian economy is being asked to 'keep it up' instead of encouraging him to be more serious in what he writes!!! Huu ushabiki kipofu sijui utawasaidia kitu gani!!

It is pretty obvious to me that all you want is to capitalize on people who support you blindly.
Your beginning remarks of the original thread was that agriculture is the main contributor to GDP' u were dead wrong on that one.
Back in around the 2nd quarter of 2008 our Tourism Minister revealed very encouraging news that tourism is the leading contributor, ahead of agriculture. The Governor even stated that it is in fact almost 3 times as that of agriculture. You are telling Tanzanians that agriculture GDP contributor.
It is pretty obvious u do not exercise any due diligence in what you write and say. All your focus is based on searching for pretty words and demonstrate that you can use the dictionary.
I told you Tanzanians need solutions not English version of what the Government is doing now.
A $650 million dollar project will be completed this year. Instead of discussing what we need to do to capitalize on it and congratulate the Govt for such an accomplishment all you do is demand investment in infrastucture as if they are not doing that.

Kikongoto Please, stop applying your PHD research on this very sensitive issue. Mashaka made no economic analysis before he decided to mislead the audience. Now you are busy defending a point of agriculture and decorate it which make no sence since the point in question is not true.
ReplyDeleteMashaka, just raise your hands and accept that you were trying to mislead people. I understand you are an investment banker,so you did not make enough research to back your point. That in an investment world would mean you did not comply with the "soft dollar (research)" rule.

Mashaka in his article there is no place he said we should abandon agriculture, did he say that? Agriculture still the main contibutor of economy in Tanzania, Tourism is a major contributor of forex not the entire economy, please read between the lines, not over them, and by economy does not mean forex alone, we have as well internal economics, please just remember that, don't be blind again, our government gets taxes from our internal economics, there so many agricultural transactions that do take place internally and they are pretty very much putting money in the government's coffer.

Tujaribuni jamani kutoa maoni je uwajibikaji, uogopaji rushwa, uchapa kazi nakadhalika, yaani hizi Ideals tutaziweka vipi kwenye vichwa vya watanzania? Kwa maoni yangu kizazi chetu kimeshakuwa affected kishenzi, sasa talking and thinking about 100 years from now wazo langu ni kuwaelimisha watoto waliopo shuleni maana hawa ndio watakuwa wamejaa maofisini na makazini miaka ijayo, kwa nini lisianzishwe somo la Rushwa adui wa maendeleo? Ambapo kila mtoto atafundishwa kuiogopa rushwa kama ukoma?
Hapa tulipo mtu akiongea kingereza safi tunamsifu kuwa jamaa kaenda shule, ni sawa kabisa, na mtu akiboronga kingereza tunamcheka jamaa hajaenda au hakuzingatia shule sawa. Sasa lengo letu liwe kwamba tuwafundishe watoto shuleni ili miaka ijayo mtu akiomba rushwa watu wamcheke duuh huyu jamaa hajaenda shule bwana yaani mpaka leo anaomba rushwa kama mababu zetu? Yaani mtu akiwa anasumbua sumbua ofisini na kutotoa haki basi watu wamcheke jamaa noma kweli sijui shule hakuudhuria?yaani hatoi haki utafikiri ni enzi zile za mababu zetu?
Hapa tulipo mtu kama kingereza hapandishi vizuri yaani hata mbele za watu anaona aibu kuongea kingereza kwa kuogopa kuchekwa, basi ifike mahali mtu aone aibu kuomba rushwa kwamba atachekwa aliogopa umande nini? Hivi alienda shule ipi mpaka ameshindwa kuelewa rushwa itamuumiza yeye pamaja na mama yake na watoto wake na Taifa zima?
Tujifikirieni jamani, wazee wetu saa hizi wanasumbuliwa katika kupewa pensheni zao, jamaa wanaoshughulikia mfuko wa pensheni hawana Morals, jamaa hawana uwajibikaji, sasa tusipoifundisha generation itakayokuja basi tujue ni sisi tutakaosumbuliwa katika kupata pensheni, lakini mtu aliyefunzwa vizuri hawezi kufanya ujinga wanaofanya jamaa wa pale kwenye mafao ya wastaafu, majumbani wazazi ndio wezi sasa basi watoto wapewe syllabus shuleni hata kama iwe propaganda, ilimradi wajifunze kutambua kipi kinafaa kipi hakifai.
Taifa letu ni kama ndoo iliyojaa matobo, utajaza maji mpaka liyamba lakini haitajaa, basi tuzibe hayo matobo halafu tuendelee kuijaza maji mwisho itajaa, matobo hayo ni rushwa, ufisadi,kutokupenda kutoa haki, kula fedha za wananchi nakadhalikika.

ReplyDeleteKuna haja ya watu kumfunza Mashaka adabu na uzalendo kwa nchi yake ambayo anaonekana haijui. Ana hicho Kiingereza cha kutisha Watanzania wasiojua ng'eng'e lakini hana zaidi ya basic economics za first year kwenye Chuo Kikuu. Arrogance na ujuaji na kujifanya mkubwa ndiyo shida yake, ni grandiosity fulani hivi, ambayo isipodhibitiwa mtu anaweza kuwa mwehu uzeeni.

Tackle this problem and the rest will fall into place.

ReplyDeleteI am somewhat perplezed by the mentality of these Mashaka supporters.They are being too vocal without anything substantial to challenge my arguments.
I have exposed gross intellectual negligence and ignorance of Mashaka in a simple language with evidence so that anyone and everyone who is objective and trully concerned about our development can see. In a nutshell, I want to raise the bar so that intellectual topics can be discussed more responsibly. I wanted you to be respected by at least being presented with researched information. No meaningful debate can be conducted out of false premise, it just cant happen!!What happened now, the debate died before it was even born!!! Why, because the original premise and assertions were not really economic but clearly politically motivated and false.
People live up to or down to expectations, if speakers belive the audience is not critical and learned they will always pull fast ones on you, if they know the audience demands due diligence they will be motivated to do their homework.
We need to change our attitudes and demand intellectual honesty instead of blind plagmiarism from speakers on serious discussions.

I am 100% Capitalist Tanzanian. I know that there is no single country in the world which became rich from depending on agriculture. If i am wrong please let any Mdau correct me. So, if some people here want Tanzania to go back to agriculture to sustain her economy, then this person has no knowledge of how the world go about to become a wealthy nation or is just simply a Communist who misses the bygone days of Ujamaa na Kujitegemea.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, dependence on tourism is not a healthy sign that the country is getting any wealthier either. Kenya is well developed in tourism sector than Tanzania but money coming in from the Kenyan Diaspora has overtaken the tourist sector (www.economist.com)in 2007.
If you need to develop, you need a business-friendly government, educated workforce, rule of law, political stability, high-tech industries like car production or IT industry, international companies present in the economy and good education. All these things are absent in Tanzania at the moment, and the data is widely available to support my points that Tanzania is a poor nation, one of the poorest, so let's stop bragging and accept the reality which is, we will depend on foreign donors for a long forseeable future to survive, since we are incapable of taking outselves out of the poverty.
