Tanzania, A Slumbering Economic Giant, When Are You Going To Wake up?
… Debate
Tanzania is, without a doubt one of the Africa’s Sleeping Economic Giants, yet is known as one of the global poorest nations. The country is rich in every aspect; it has natural resources that can perhaps push her into the front line of Africa’s economically elite nations, and that is possible if only her leadership could properly manage, and evenly distribute her wealth amongst her people, while her citizenry is adopting what is known as sacrifice for a better tomorrow.
For three years in a row, I have been touring our country; I have visited most of the Northern provinces, Kilimanjaro, Mara, Mwanza and Arusha. I have also visited Tanga, Coastal, Iringa and Morogoro provinces to see the beauty of our country, and must admit that, the beauty and richness of Tanzania is breathtaking.
Less than two weeks ago, along with a friend, while touring Morogoro region, we stood on mountain slope, and looked down the hill and saw a green, fertile, idle and arable land, which drew tears of joy from my eyes, and pocked my heart with hope, that one day, our country will rise up from her long economic slumber, to the frontline of economic might. Looking at the river Mara, Ruaha and Wami flow, made me ask myself, why do we even enter into bogus contracts with Richmond and Dowans in the first place? If Tennessee Valley Authority is man man-made project, with more than 300 million dollar annual revenue, how come the likes can’t be in our country?
Standing on a cliff of the historic Ngorongoro crater, watching the landscape, and animals roving inside the crater looked wondrous. Crossing the plains of Serengeti in 2008 into Nyamongo Gold mines, where heavy, state of the art machinery worked the earth, made me feel that Tanzania was on the right economic track. Unfortunately, less than a mile from the mines, were humans living in wretchedness; women and children fetching stagnant water, kilometers away, while their land is producing gold for people thousands of miles away; A puzzle for your to un-puzzle
While in Israel in 2007, I managed to visit the sparsely populated Negev region, and witnessed how the northern part of the desert has been transformed into a wonder; from the sky, Negev is Greenland in a desert. Humans are drawing water almost one thousand feet from the ground to irrigate their farms, water their flowers and tomatoes. Israelis are using sophisticated technological innovation of their own, to carry aquaculture or other fish farming in the desert, and this shows how determination can drive men into higher heights.
Considering Israelis many survival wars with her Arab neighbors, they would have been history by now if it was not for their determination. This tiny nation of six million people is standing as one of the world most resilient, most development, economically prospered, technologically and militarily intimidating. Israel depends on her human capital for her survival. Her citizens and leaders are sacrificial; they are fronting their country’s interest –survival- ahead of their own lust.
Tanzania is far richer than Israel. She has huge gold reserves, plenty of diamonds and tanzanite just to name a few. Tanzania has large deposits of natural gas, huge arable and fertile land. She has many water bodies, including the strategic Indian Ocean, yet ranks almost at the bottom of world poorest nations. Tanzanians do not know what to do with their wealth, despite the availability of many capable minds. It is sad to say that the country cannot do anything on its own without the help of foreigners, who in most cases are handed free reign on country’s wealth
The misery that is upon her people is UNQESTIONABLY, the driving force behind the embarrassing downing of copters as in the case of Nyamongo, in which the locals downed a mining company’s helicopter. It is the poverty, despair and feeling of betrayal, that has led to the frequent embarrassing behavior of stoning of her leaders. People are desperately trying to find ways out of the quandary of destitution. People are angry and tired of seeing foreigners loot their wealth unabated
It is quite logical to blame our leadership for their mismanagement of the country, as well as their economic crimes. But on the other hand, we must be realistic with ourselves. Leaders are meant to lead the people into finding new paths, not to solve all problems for the people. Our leadership has led us astray, and that should not be an excuse for us to end our journey. We must find other paths, and the task to do so lies in the hands of the people.
We the people must bear the responsibility for our social problems; we have failed ourselves because some of us collude with the misguided leaders to rape our nation. Fisadis do what they please, because we lack the courage, and cohesiveness amongst ourselves to say NO to their social ills and economic crimes.
We must understand that, country’s leadership is a small percentage of the almost 40 million Tanzanians. We must be realistic. We must bear responsibility for voting in, time after time those who have driven our country into the current situation and abused our trust. The Fisadis do not operate in the vacuum, they are elected by us. You and I have the voice and power to strip them of their positions and even jail them, and the lacking tool is courage, cohesion, and unity. We must be united, and shun all the elements that divides us while embracing the forces that unites us. We must embark on the wagon that promotes unity for us to make progress
We are lacking what is called self sacrifice; we must be sacrificial, and be ready to place the interest of the country ahead of our own, in order to pull away from the list of poorest nations. This is not a work of one man, or a group of people, it is everybody’s duty. The president can’t do it alone, he is not a superman; he needs your support. Neither can a minister, but the people can; me and you.
Just like Dr.Hildebrand Shayo pointed out that, it is hypocritical on the part of the world’s economic powers to try to impose on the weak countries a free trade doctrine that they themselves cannot practice” well, this is true due to the fact that, we have created an environment for the big powers to exercise their hypocrisy. We are lacking focus and unity needed to alleviate the continent out of economic despair , and will always remain to be treated as panhandlers as long as we keep on sleeping on gold, whilst stretching our hands for handouts!
We cannot realize our full potential if every evening, is an evening at the bar. We cannot prosper, and will never prosper if our government keeps on licensing bars after every hundred meters in the middle of residential areas. No room for economic prosperity as long as many of us, see each day as a day of celebration. We must take some days as days of sacrifice for the sake of tomorrow. Government do what people allows them to do; there can never be a bar in a residential area pumping uncontrolled music, when we the people, say NO
We can never realize security or economic progress, as long as some of us are feeling insecure and helpless in their own country. There can never be hope, as long as we remain divided on the issue of senseless and barbaric killing of the albinos. We must be united, and must speak with one voice as a nation in order to tackle matters of national concern. It is we, the people with the key to unlock the mystery of terror that is tearing our country apart; mystery being perpetrated upon our innocent brothers and sisters with skin handicap.
We cannot expect the government, or other the law enforcement, to work magic if we don’t cooperate with them on how to apprehend the perpetrators who are living amongst us. It is we, the people, with powers to create a conducive and secure environment, which will foster positive economic progress in the country. It is we the people, who must sacrifice for a better tomorrow.
We can never prosper as long as our domestic innovation and productivity is stifled by unfair competition; flooding of the domestic market by cheaper, substandard and dangerous goods, which are freely passing into the country through legally established channels- watchdogs- which in turn suffocates our domestic productivity, and endangers the lives of our people. This is nothing short of treason, and should be treated as such, for under the umbrella of patriotism, love for the country supersede short term monetary gains
There can never be prosperity, as long as the mighty and the powerful economic rapists -people entrusted with country’s leadership- continue to design, and dig tunnels they need to smuggle the country’s wealth into heir offshore accounts, yet leaving deserving students without means to secure their right to education.
My Countrymen, we must be mindful of the fact that, the foundation of human success in political, social or economic aspects leans, not on individuality, but on sacrifice for the common good. It is this philosophy of giving rather than receiving that has a cure to some of the societal ills. It is the same philosophy that will render equal justice to the poor and the rich alike. Philosophy of equitable distribution of both justice and country’s wealth
In an environment, where expectant mothers lose their infants on daily basis due to poor healthcare, police officers serving under poor working conditions, and teachers going for months without pay, I see nothing but an intimidating cloud of a darker future. Under continued degradation, demoralization, humiliation towards one another, squabble amongst ourselves; struggle to destroy talents instead of uplifting and refining them , as long as we continue to practice vengeance, hate and sabotage towards one another, Tanzania, sleeping economic giant will never rise from her sleep, and I can only cry; my beloved country, tears of THEE.
Mungu Ibariki Tanzania

John Mashaka, you are a rose in the wilderness! You are at a wrong place trying to push the right ideas! I know deep inside you it is clear that Tanzania is not the agenda on this blog! This is a blog for haters and those who want to pass time or have all the time in the world to do nothing productive hence the failure to have anything productive to give or contribute!
ReplyDeleteThe article above is well written but i get the feeling that it is being drummed in dead ears! You and me and all know what the contributers would love to see and read on this blog…..fabrications and falsity! who is doing what and why, who is screwing who and who is not succeeding in life, who is HIV and how happy we are about that, all ‘pieces’ of vapour and nothingness!
I will not be suprised with the negative reception or silence given to your article. If you manage to get 30 comments then your are lucky but look at the number of comments on the stupid and useless photos posted, read the wishes of those who comment! It is pathetic and disheartening but that is part of Tanzania, there is you and them!
I cant find a conclusion! May be am too upset may be there is none or both
An ambitious oversight of our well lay back approach of our government in tapping on our precious natural resources.
ReplyDeleteTo be precious what MASHAKA is saying we are among the richest country in the world, if you can listen and decipher as what I am talking about. GOLD, diamonds, Tanzanite, and all those precious gems, that we are not putting on our reserve.
This is DUMB, it has been reported Tanzanians living in AMERICA have been sending more Money back home(Tanzania) than what we have received for our precious gems combined for the last year alone in foreign exchange. You Judge.
Simple to say, we are back on basics, consumerism has now become a stranglehold to most of us, NECESSITY THAT IS LEFT WITH US TO ENDURE, for those living in the west but for those at home, hard time has been there for some time.
I know my neighbor who is eating ugali with lime for months, that was 2 years ago, since he cannot afford fish, rice, meat, beans and other food commodities.
We are facing the greatest depression of our life time, in the world, forget the worst of all which are facing majority of our families, friends and neighbors in our country, if it is getting tight here in the WEST, except the worst of them all in Tanzania.
the smart thing to reserve your income back home, consume whats necessary and important to survive. The plane is about to take off, tight up your belt, Consumerism and spending, and spending in the west
has never been the solution, it was a time bomb waiting to explode and now we see the results. A bubbles have burst, credit crunch and so on. Soon or later will see people stashing money on their pillows, CAN'T trust the banks anymore, that what we do in Africa for most of the time anyway.
The World Economy is readjusting itself, hopefully things will get better after getting worse.
Personally, I have sold my VW bora 1.4, and bought a lesser engine Toyota VITZ, less maintenance and less fuel consumption, it is a TOYOTA! GOLD is now a WORLD CURRENCY, Tanzania wake up..

I strongly appreciate your grave concern on the smoky economy but Um afraid you may be talking to Political Dummies who know nothing about Economics, least of all about International Financial Meltdown! If you ever suggested anything to do with mebbe reducing Taxes or cutting down Bank Interest Rates in this country, the first thing that will happen to you is perhaps recheck your profile in order to establish the source of your anti-CCM sentiments! How dare you suggest about reducing taxes?Forgotten the basics of Bongonomics I mentioned last time? The truth is Our economy by having lost all its sensitivity to all external economic shocks is by definition a Dead Economy which needs to be taken into A Surgical Theatre in order to mebbe assume a new economic order,a new life economically! But not with the same Brains behind the wheels,no sir!It will never work!Come to the Export-Import Market in the country! You just have to take a week off spend some time at our DSM Port carry out your own private survaillance and find out who our major Importers and Exporters could be?You will get the shock of your life! This economy mighty as she is in the hands of just a Handfull!Do we have A Stock Market Exchange in this country? Why Not?Does the Administration know the consequences of their Financial Hypocrisy?Do they have to anyway?KAMSAADA THEORY ever heard of it John? The Financial Infrastructure simply does not exist in this country to be able to offer practical solutions to your nice ideas,John!Nobody in the Govt has ever even thought of until now of the necessity of An Emergency Budget Review in the event of a huge Donor Aid meltdown!Nobody in the Govt has even thought of Our Gold being a very usefull financial asset and therefore do something about it as you suggested!Yes,I have just remembered,John! They were told not to touch anything until the Darlings of Washington DC,the IMF and the World Bank came to to 'insert their Financial Tool into our Woomanomics!'Then it would be all right!

Although a small segment of Tanzanians with secure access to employment in the public and business sectors enjoy a relatively high standard of living, the vast majority of Tanzanians live in poverty. Indeed, the United Nations Development Programme 's (UNDP) human development index (HDI) listings, which arranges countries according to their overall level of human development, ranks Tanzania 156th out of a total of 174 nations. The HDI, a composite index (one that assesses more than one variable) that measures life expectancy at birth, adult literacy rate, school enrollment ratio, and GDP per capita, is indicative of a country's general social and economic well-being. As such, Tanzania's HDI ranking demonstrates that the country is one of the poorest and least developed in the world.
ReplyDeleteUnder the socialist policies of Julius Nyerere, the Tanzanian government focused heavily on achieving social equity through the development of a strong health and education sector. Inequality in the early years of Ujamaa was mainly the result of the colonial legacy in which some peasants were connected to the cash crop export economy while others were not. Those that lived in areas favorable for cash crop production enjoyed a slightly higher standard of living than their subsistence peasant
counterparts. Though Nyerere's social policies were generous, they were unsustainable in a context of economic crisis and negligible growth. Moreover, many critics, such as Enos S. Bukuku, the author of The Tanzanian Economy: Income Distribution and Economic Growth, argue that Nyerere's development policies promoted the modern, nascent industrial sector, at the expense of agriculture. The result was actually increased poverty in the countryside, and the creation of a few highly skilled and highly paid jobs associated with the parastatals and policies of import substitution industrialization.
Today, the cleavage (division; in this case economic) between the general peasantry and those with higher-paying jobs in the urban centers persists, though this type of inequality is characteristic of most countries that are still in the throes of the development process. According to the CIA World Factbook, the poorest 10 percent of the Tanzanian population consume a marginal 2.9 percent of total national consumption, while the richest 10 percent consume 30.2 percent. In 1998, the GNP per capita in Tanzania was estimated at a paltry US$220, whereas the GNP per capita in the United States was US$29,240 in the same year.
Social policy in Tanzania is currently guided by the so-called "Vision 2025," a comprehensive framework emphasizing 7 priority areas linked to overall poverty reduction. In 2000-01, the Tanzanian government allocated its budget amid these 7 priority areas as follows: education (23.2 percent), health (8.4 percent), roads (6.4 percent), agriculture (1.0 percent), judiciary (1.0 percent), water (0.6 percent), and HIV/AIDS (0.6 percent). While the government's coherent strategy is a welcomed development, the IMF notes that it needs work in some areas, including education, promotion of agricultural/rural development, gender strategies, and a more comprehensive approach to HIV/AIDS and the environment.
The vast majority of Tanzanians spend their meager incomes on the basic necessities of life, such as food, rent, clothing, fuel, and transportation. Very little is spent on entertainment and recreation, which are considered luxuries for those that live in considerable poverty. To make matters worse, in the past 10 years the increase in the GNP per capita has been grossly outweighed by mounting inflation, which means that Tanzanians are having an increasingly difficult time purchasing the commodities essential for human existence. The UNDP estimates that the annual growth rate in GNP per capita between 1990 to 1998 was 0.4 percent, while the average annual rate of inflation during the same period was 24.3 percent.

As a Tanzanian, I strongly object to our leaders spending our tax dollars attending Investors’ Conferences abroad without addressing the poor state of our country first. Foreign investors will not simply pour millions of dollars into our economy just because they shook our President’s hands.
ReplyDeleteAt the moment, our whole infrastructure is broken down. We have shortages of water and electricity. Our labour laws are complex. The government services are poorly delivered by corrupted and often ill-trained bureaucrats. Our court system works at a snail’s speed. Our education system is out of date. Our doctors lack equipments and medicine to treat patients with serious medical conditions.
Endemic corruption at all levels of the government means that the rich and the politically connected individuals are above the law. The laws to protect life, liberty and property are in the books but hardly enforced by the corrupted system. Government officials and big shot businessmen steal billions of shillings from the treasury with impunity and are then bailed out by the courts. Yet, a poor citizen charged with a bail-able petty crime faces years in jail waiting for a verdict because he can’t afford to bribe a judge.
Tanzania is blessed with many natural resources and a fertile land. One must wonder then why our country is still poor and can’t seem to attract major investors. The latest figures from The World Bank (www.fdi.net) shows that we have attracted only $370 million dollars in 2006. This is such a small change. Chile, a South American country, exported $700 million dollars worth of just wine last year, according to the BBC site. To understand why we have very few major global players in our country, we need to re-visit our history.
We lost three decades of development because we were governed by a one-party socialist regime of Mwalimu Nyerere. Any Tanzanian who worked hard and got wealthy was immediately seen as a traitor to the system. Many businesses were nationalized and many properties were confisticated from their right owners. The economy was quickly ruined, Zimbabwe style. Industrialists were not able to buy raw materials and new machineries to expand production. Ownership of foreign currencies was prohibited and subject to a jail term. Price controls were in effect. Few people were allowed to leave the country for further studies. This political climate discouraged further investments in all sectors of the economy and stunted our academic development for many years to come.
As a result of negative growth, people got poorer as decades passed. Soon enough, Nyerere had to swallow his pride and begged friendly nations for food even though Tanzania had a fertile land. The educational system was totally ruined. Government-controlled universities chocked academic freedom and forced many professors to leave the country. Those who stayed behind were not able to go abroad to update their skills and lectured generations of graduates with the same stale disciplines with a strong dosage of socialist ideology. Mandatory military service before university discouraged many parents from sending their children to universities.
Our people developed a dependency addiction. They expected the socialist government to take good care of them for life with minimum work. They expected to be employed, fed, and housed cheaply. This was the dreamland installed into their minds by the socialist propaganda machine.
Our past is hunting now. It is difficult to change the mentality of dependency as exemplified by our own government towards foreign aid. Strong work ethics is also missing in the society. The economy is still running on a twelve-hour rotation instead of twenty-four as found in many other countries.
Poor education means that few of our graduates are competent in English, the language of international trade. It is still difficult to find local graduates who are trained to cope with sophisticated and ever-changing mechanics of international trade. Skilled labour in many fields is in short supply due to low priority given to our universities by our government. There are few disciplines were one can earn a doctorate. Many bright students have to depend on hard-to-get foreign scholarships to further their studies.
To try to bring investors in such a pathetic environment is a waste of our meagre resources. It is just not realistic scenario. It is like trying to invite guests to your party when you know that you cannot afford to serve them water let alone dinner. Investors will not come in a country where we can’t even guarantee them adequate electricity for their machineries. The simple fact that we are still dependent on foreign aid for a third of the government expenditure is a powerful indication to a would-be investor that our economy is in the Intensive Care Unit. We have not been able to grow rich enough for the middle class people to emerge with disposable income like China. Investors flock to China because they have 300 million middle class people eager to buy western products and services. If we need to move forward, we need to sincerely reform our country. What we need is a major house clean-up before we can invite guests in.
Availability of skilled labour, presence of a solid middle class, political, social and economic stability, good infrastructure, attractive business policies, independent judiciary system and good medical facilities are some of the factors that are taken into consideration when investors decide to go overseas.
We should open our eyes and minds and learn from others. Japan learned to make cars from America, and now they beat them hands down in their own economy. South Korea learned to make electronic products from Japan, and now they compete head to head with Japanese electronics worldwide. Brazilians learned to make aeroplanes from America and Europe, now they sell them Brazil-made aeroplanes worth millions of dollars a year.
When Brazil and South Korea emerged from years of dictatorship, their government set up a committee of scholars and tapped their brainpower to develop their countries. The scholars were hand-picked and graduated from prestigious universities of the west. They had advance degrees in various fields such as sciences, engineering, medicine, law and education. They fine-tuned their foreign knowledge into their system to fit the needs of their countries. With hard work, they managed to transform their economies beyond recognition. Millions of their people were lifted from poverty and into the middle class. Foreign investors took notice and started investing in their economies. Local industries were expanded using the latest technologies in the market. They also aggressively sent their best students abroad on full government scholarships and transferred the knowledge gained into their universities and research and development centres. Within two decades they developed world brands such as LG, Samsung, Hyundai, Embraer and Petrobras. Even military dictators like Augusto Pinochet of Chile took notice and copied them. He is credited for modernising Chilean economy even though he was a brutal leader. Chile now exports $38 billion worth of goods and services. They are also the 5th biggest exporter of wine.
At the moment, we have many Tanzanians who have studied in prestigious universities in the west. I urge the leadership to seek their advice and change the way things are run in Tanzania. We need to make Tanzania a business-friendly not bureaucratically-friendly nation. And this is just the beginning of the reforms urgently needed to make our country attractive.
There are many patriotic Tanzanians who would be honoured to contribute in a meaningful and positive way. Many of them have been discouraged because the government is not sincere in reforming the system. There are so many reforming committees at the moment in various sectors of the government. However, they lack the power to enforce unpopular but necessary reforms and are under the supervision and employment of the government. They need to work independent of the government pressure to be effective in their jobs. Many of our honourable leaders love to bark orders whenever visit places and see inefficiency. They are playing games to score political points but it is ineffective because the people given orders are not skilled in their jobs and the system still supports such people.
An average Tanzanian is still hostile towards foreign investors. This kind of attitude can only change if they see them as partners and not predators. Tanzanians needs to feel that their lives are really improving to embrace foreign investors. Investors will only come if they can make money, not because they fell in love with our weather or Mount Kilimanjaro. We just produce so little goods and services in comparison to other nations. Investors take one look at our $27 billion dollar domestic market (GDP) and see what it can offer against $1.5 trillion dollar market of Brazil or $3.6 trillion dollars market of India. Soon enough you can guess where the investor will head. The slow growth of our economy for so many years is the reason why we need to reform so urgently. These Investors’ Forums will not be effective because we are just not well-equipped to make investors comfortable with their money.
We have tax-free access to many developed markets, part of the aid package to help our local industries grow. Unfortunately we can’t take advantage of this generous offer because we lack sophisticated industries to produce export-quality products. We are losing a golden opportunity to establish a global Tanzanian brand for free. (It usually takes billions of dollars to establish a brand name in the global market). Furthermore, agricultural products and minerals by themselves are not enough to lift us from poverty. We need to produce high-tech products and services to sell to the global market. No country in the world has gotten rich from selling coffee, bananas and tea. Mineral resources are only useful if we can develop our own technologies to mine them and not share profits. Currently, we are forced to give tax credits and other incentives to foreign miners and the profit margin is not enough to support even the neighbouring villages around the minefields to have access to clean water, schools, hospitals and power supplies. We need our experts to come up with a business plan which will be beneficial to both the investors and the people of Tanzania. If the Australians, Canadians, Brazilians, South Africans and Chileans can mine their own fields, why can’t we? What’s stopping us?
It is imperative that we organize ourselves now; we have wasted way too much time in neglecting our economy and people. We have the right educated Tanzanians to advice us. They have been exposed to new ideas and business plans which best fit the current global business. We can use their advice to cut costs and reduce red-tape. We can ask our engineers and planners to build efficient transportation and telecommunications networks. They can build better sewage system and recycling plants to make our environment cleaner. Our business Dons can advice us how to run our industries efficiently. We need to improve access to electricity. We can build solar powers. We sit near the Indian Ocean and yet have no drinking water. Why not de-salinize the ocean like they do in the Arabian deserts. We can use the water to irrigate our fields and feed the people and create bio-fuel industries at the same time.
We need a government which is flexible in running the economy. We don’t need experts from the IMF in Washington, DC to tell us that our economy is in recession or is experiencing hyperinflation. We should use our economists to diagnose it and fine-tune our economy as we see it fit. In short, we need a government with a futuristic vision. The time is now. The future of our country is in our hands.
Tanzania's GDP: 27 Billion USD
Nigeria's GDP: 127 Billion USD
Kenya's GDP: 37 Billion USD
Egypt's GDP: 303 Billion USD
South Africa's GDP: 187 Billion USD
India's GDP: 3.6 TRILLION USD
ALL FIGURES 2006.
Our country might be beautiful and green and fertile, but unless we produce more goods and services by ourselves (Gross Domestic Product minus Imports), then we will always be poor.

Uchumi wa Israel unategemea foreign aid kutoka USA $3 bllion a year. Unazungumzia Israel kijeshi na nchi za kiarabu. Israel wanapewa misaada yote ya kijeshi kutoka USA.Try to have accurately analysis.
ReplyDeleteMashaka get your English straight, you are mixing up the functions of pronouns, e.g you and your.
ReplyDeleteYour sentences are too long, for example this one.............
It is for this reason, why many of young people have resorted into preying on motorists along the city streets, and country’s highways, in order to win their daily bread, yet their country is exempting almost all foreign multinational from paying taxes, and cannot guarantee medical care to her poorest of the poor.
Or this one ......
Get someone to help you with what we call writing mechanics.
And, we do not have provinces, Tanzania is not Kenya. In Tanzania we have regions and do not confuse the two.
Otherwise, you challenge is good, and have been written by many many people already, including some blogers of this very blog.
All the best Mashaka.
ReplyDeletemdauzz,

Guys I am sorry; but I really don't see what is so impressive about Mashaka's piece. There is nothing there to be impressed by. His Enlish is poor and his Economics is probably what I knew at O level. I really hope that some of those remarks praising him and hoping he would one day serve and save Tanzania in a position of high responsibility were tongue in cheek! If they were meant in earnest then we are really in trouble.
Jamani tufanyeni mabadiliko!!!
ReplyDeleteWewe unayesema ndio first lady hebu check vizuri mimi ndio first LADY WA MASHAKA. Mashaka hebu mwabie huyo kuwa your taken.
ReplyDelete"Tanga, Coastal, Iringa and Morogoro provinces"..what a joke! Baadaye mtu kama huyu ambaye hajui hata province ni nini mtakuja kumpa uongozi mkitegemea atawaondolea umasikini. Poor Bongo!!!
ReplyDeleteNyie munaomgombania mashaka, nani kwa waambia mashaka yuko single? Hebu toeni humu ujinga wenu.
ReplyDeleteUtumbo.
ReplyDeleteNilisema long time ago alichokuwa anakitafuta huyu kijana, sasa mmeona?
ReplyDeleteMtazamo wako Mzuri Mashaka.
unanichekesha wewe unayejiita FIRST LADY NDIO MIMI nina uhakika huyo John Mashaka mwenyewe hata hakujui........keep on dreaming gal.....LOL

Huyu Mashaka alisema tatizo la dumping ni kubwa kuliko corruption, he does not even know that it is corruption that leads to dumping!!!
This boy is a joke.

Mashaka, njoo Alabama tukakate mzizi wa fitna, you have until April 10th to confirm participation, mimi nimesha book chumba cha hoteli, nakusubiri, waTanzania wanakusubiri kwa hamu kubwa.
Kama kweli unaipenda nchi yako let us debate in Alabama.
(US Blogger)
hamna kitu hapa, naona majigambo tu, kama kweli mna mbongo si mkawasilishe paper mtakakosikilizwa?

Dr. Shayo and the great tanznian Genius, John Mashaka, you have the potential to pull our country out of the ditch. Led by Captain John Mashaka, 2015 is the year we are waiting to see you bring the long awaited change.
ReplyDeleteYou are the two great emerging Hero’s we would love to see joining Anna Kilango Malecela and Dr. Slaa and re-shaping our country. Back to your point Mr. John, It is due time for someone to discuss openly the future of our country.
The country is so rich with gold, but seemingly the few in power have taken control of the mines and the wealth of the country.
ReplyDeleteMashaka, I have been very critical of your writing in the past. But this time around, you have nailed it and taken words out of my mouth. You are a hero and true patriot. Your courage to save your country is increadible.
I am waiting to see your name in the ballot box 2015, with Dr. Shayo as your Prime minister ili awachape viboko hawa mafisadi wetu. Boy you have a talent,

Tanzania has collected only $1 million in income tax from foreign mining companies even though they exported nearly $3 billion worth of gold over a four-year period, a new report has revealed.
As at the end of last year, AngloGold Ashanti was the sole mining company operating in Tanzania to have paid any corporate income tax, says the report by Action Aid and other advocacy groups.
The company made a $1 million payment in 2007 on its Geita gold mine operation, which provided Johannesburg-based AngloGold Ashanti with gross profits of $93 million between 2002 and mid 2007.
According to the report, Canada-based Barick Gold, another large mining company doing business in Tanzania, reported a net income of $97 million between 2004 and the first half of 2007 but paid no corporate income tax to the Tanzanian government.
Between 2002 and 2006, mining companies exported around $2.9 billion worth of gold. During that time, the government earned around $17.4 million in royalties, charged at 3 per cent of the market value minus transport and transaction costs.
“If royalties were charged at 5 per cent as it has now been recommended by a presidential commission, the government revenue would have increased to $145 million over the next five years,” says the report titled: “Breaking the Curse: How Transparent Taxation and Fair Taxes can Turn Africa’s Mineral Wealth into Development.”
“Mining companies operating in Africa are granted too many tax subsidies and concessions,” says the report, which also covers Congo, Ghana, Malawi, Sierra Leone, South Africa and Zambia. “There is high incidence of tax avoidance by mining companies conditioned by such measures as secret mining contracts, corporate mergers and acquisitions, and various ‘creative’ accounting mechanisms.”
Tanzania negotiates from a position of weakness in its dealings with multinational mining corporations, says Peter Kafumu, the country’s Commissioner for Minerals.
He says: “The companies are holding a panga by the handle and we are getting the sharp end.”
Foreign governments also lobby in Tanzania on behalf of the mining companies, the report says.
It says that in June last year, the staff of the Canadian High Commission in Tanzania tried to influence parliamentarians to reject the recommendations of the Bomani Commission which had been appointed by President Jakaya Kikwete to review the country’s mining contracts and legal framework.
The companies further try to take advantage of weaknesses in Tanzania’s legal structure, the report adds.
It quotes Mr Kafumu as saying: “We have no capacity to look at their books. The companies can write the books so that third world countries cannot regulate. Even the contracts are difficult. I think the mining companies exploit our weaknesses in law and capacity.”
The companies have used their negotiating leverage to gain exemptions from local government taxes and fuel levies, the report adds.
It notes that under negotiated agreements, the mining companies do not pay local government taxes in excess of $200,000 a year. And even that sum, which is much lower than standard tax rates, is not fully collected.
Royalties account for the largest source of revenues that the Tanzanian government is able to collect from the companies.
It earned about $17 million in royalties per year during a five-year period. The figure is the product of a 3 per cent charge on the market value of gold exports, minus the cost of transportation and transactions.
Meanwhile, mining companies in Tanzania are expected to make their formal response to the accusations contained in the report.
Industrial sources told The EastAfrican that think the companies and the chamber for energy and minerals would be making a formal response to what is contained in the report.
“It is not good for the industry or the country,” said the sources.

This is a CCM material to counter Chadema’s Slaa and Kabwe, and so is Dr. Shayo and January Makamba

Mdau from USA
If we are serious lets question the theft that is happening within our country, and not questioning fake stuffs that are flourishing everywhere in this world.
ReplyDeleteLet’s see Mashaka writing an article of how we can deal with emblezzment, corruption and umangi -meza , that has been our core problem in Tanzania.
Let’s see the true you on addressing issue that we face now and not scape-goating our problems to individual foreign citizens or countries that has nothing to do with our corruptions.
We have seen this in USA; some years back, when people were masking their problems by saying illegal immigrants are the ones causing all problems in US, or ,its blacks because there are ones in welfare programs. In reality it wasn’t even one of those but the economy was starting to turn upwards down and we came to know the reality now.
Let’s wake up and stop blaming stupid individual Chinese on exporting fake products. The one to blame is our country and especially government officials who allows its importers to buy fake commodities and ship them in our country. Is it not ok to blame our government which makes itself profitable by taking customs revenue on fake products? Or allowing the fake goods to pass without any TBS checkout, or allowing the revenues to end up in hands of corrupt TRA officials?

Mungu wabariki vijana wetu
TANZANIA IMEFURAHIA MIAKA MINGI YA AMANI TOFAUTI NA NCHI NYINGINE ZINAZOTUZUNGUKA; LAKINI TUKO UKINGONGONI; TUSIPOTUBU TUTAANGAMIA: TUMTAFUTE BWANA MAADANA ANAPATIKANA LA SIVYO KIKOMBE KITAJAA UPESI!! This Mashaka kid has only one advantage over many of you; the wanna be writes, he is one of those kids whose parents were well off to accord them better education from childhood.
ReplyDeleteHe has now turned out to be such a well polished, with excellent rhetoric power, that can turn a scrappy piece into something so glossy.
I am surprised by people like of Gama who can dare attacking him. Good job msukuma, you have really tried, but I am sure you are not going to dare next time.
I am sorry to say, but Mashaka is reigning over and humiliating most of his critics and opponents because they don’t have creativity. This is the main reason of him being an internet sensation and celebrity.
They are incapable of being creative in tackling him (putting their ideas together) and write something constructive of their own instead of capitalizing on Mashaka’s errors.
your semi community college degrees should be well utilized instead of being used to try someone you clearly well going to embarass you.
He is not the measure of everything in which and every one of you must criticize. US-blogger wants Mashaka, Mdau from US Wants Mashaka, Mokes Gama wants Mashaka, guys you need to chill out
Anony April 3:44 am, don't be foolish. There is a huge difference between attacking someone's ideas because you don't like him/her and offering your views and constructive criticism.
ReplyDeleteTo give an opinion which is against Mashaka's doesn't mean we hate him or are jelous of his education or success. One must accept that there is always someone somewhere who will not agree with your ideas put forth. That is why, one must defend his/her thesis in the academia. If Mashaka doesn't want to be offended by negative criticism then he shouldn't print his two-cents here.
By the way, not all of us have semi-community degrees. I have two university degrees from Boston University, in international business management and finance, MBA.
Tanzanians must accept the notion that in a free world, everyone have a right to an opinion, something Balozi Michuzi doesn't give us sometimes with his self-censorships even though no foul languages is used.
If we develop the culture of accepting unfavourable opinions against our ideas, then we might have a chance to persuade dictators such as Mugabe, Gaddafi and Mubarak to accept the results of the vote of no confidence against their leadership that the majority of their people expressed (albeit in rigged elections) and to respect a democratic process of the majority winner takes all.

Hayo ni maneno ambayo Watanzania tunayaongea kila siku.
Nothing against that if that's your game plan.
Ila lete hoja nini kifanyike.
