




MWANZA city is bracing itself to host the inaugural 21-kilometre race dubbed ‘Rock City’ marathon 2009, on October 4.
The event aimed at promoting sports and market the country’s’ tourism attractions in the Lake Zone area, was officially launched in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
Organised by Capital-Plus International, an integrated communications firm, the race billed to be grueling will attract runners from all over the country as well as neighboring countries.
Co-ordinator of the race Phillipo Simon said the race will start at the CCM Kirumba Stadium in the morning and will pass through the city streets and back to the stadium.
Phillipo said that invitations have been sent to the neighbouring countries, namely Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Uganda and Zambia.
“This would be the biggest sporting ever at the Great Lakes region and we do hope that it will help unearth young talents in the sport”, he said.Theme of the marathon, according to Phillipo is “Promoting local tourism through sports”.
“We think that sports can play a very big role in promoting the country’s sports tourism and we saw a need to market some of the tourism attractions in Lake Zone”, he said.

He mentioned some of the tourism attractions in the region as Saa Nane Island, Rubondo and the huge hanging rocks in Lake Victoria.
Phillipo said that there would also be three other events. These include a five-kilometre fun race, two-kilometre race for people with disabilities and three-kilometre corporate classic race.
“For the corporate classic race, the participants from different companies would be sponsored and run and one banner”, he said.
He said that all the funds from the registration would be donated to orphanages in the lake Zone.
Phillipo said that the marathon has been sponsored by Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL), National Social Security (NSSF), New Africa Hotel, 1&1 Internet Solutions Ltd and and Isamilo Lodge.
He said that registration forms are available at Isamilo Lodge in Mwanza, CCM Kirumba Stadium, Capital- Plus International Limited, Athletics Tanzania (AT) headquarters in Dar es Salaam and Pizzeria Restaurant in Mwanza. Also they can be downloaded from
