PRESIDENT Jakaya Kikwete today joined other world in New York for a series of historic meetings to deal with the global crises, such as climate change,financial and economic crises as well the threat of nuclear ploriferation.
The president arrived here yesterday leading a high-profile delegation that includesthe Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, Mr Bernard Membe,Health and Social Welfare Minister, Prof. David Mwakyusa and Minister of State inthe Vice President's Office (Environment), Dr Batilda Burian.
The president was later today scheduled to attend a luncheon and dinner hosted by USPresident Barack Obama in honour of African heads of state and government and also take part in the High-Level Meeting on Climate Change.
The 192-member world body is meeting for its 64th Summit at a time when the world isstill fighting the food, climate change, flu and global financial and economiccrises, which have affected global efforts to achieve the UN Millennium DevelopmentGoals (MDGs).
The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main deliberative organ of the UN. It iscomposed of representatives of all UN member states, each of which has one vote.
Decisions on important questions, such as those on peace and security, admission ofnew members and budgetary matters, require a two-thirds majority. Decisions on otherquestions are by simple majority.
President Kikwete is on Thursday afternoon scheduled to address the UN GeneralAssembly, according to a programme released here yesterday, This will the fourthtime for Mr Kikwete to address the assembly since he became president in December2005.
The president would also meet various dignitaries during his stay in New York,including the President and Chief Executive Officer of Barrick Gold Corporation, MrAaron Regent and the CEO of Grumet Reserves Serengeti Tanzania Limited, Mr PaulTudor-Jones.
On Friday, President Kikwete will deliver a speech at the 4th Annual AfricaPresidential Forum on Tourism under the theme: "State of Tourism in Africa: How Tourism can Drive Economic Growth for a State, Region and Continent."
