The fifth batch of graduands of the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) will be conferred the University awards during its graduation ceremony to be held on Saturday 12th December, 2009 at Victoria Garden grounds, Mnazi Mmoja, in the Isles.
His Excellency Dr. Amani Abeid Karume, the Chancellor of the University and the President of Zanzibar who is also the Chairman of the Revolutionary Council will grace this occasion around 03.00 p.m.
In this graduation ceremony, a total of 295 graduands are expected to be awarded their degrees, diplomas and certificates in various courses, among them 150 are females. 132 students will attain their Bachelor of Arts degree with Education while 48 students will graduate for the Bachelor of Science degree with Education.
For the first time, there will be an intake of graduands who will come out with their Bachelor of Science in Computer degrees. This group of graduates will comprise 11 members.
Diploma and Certificate courses in Computer Science which will make up 17 and 8 students respectively.
Apart from these alumnae, there will be another group of 79 members who will obtain their Diplomas in Languages with Education.
Before this incident, on Friday 11th December, 2009 the ‘SUZA gala night’ will take place at the Vuga campus - TAKILUKI Hall starting from 8.00 p.m. where several academic entertainments will be performed. Hon. Ali Juma Shamuhuna is expected to be the guest of honour.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The State University of Zanzibar was established by Act No. 8 of the House of Representatives of 1999. The University started to operate in 2002. The late Ambassador Ahmed Hassan Diria was its first Council chairman and Prof. Saleh Idris Muhammed became its earliest Vice Chancellor.
The current chairman of the University Council is Mr. Hassan Nassor Moyo, a prominent retired politician. Mr. Moyo took over the Council chairmanship from Hon. Ali Juma Shamuhuna, the Minister for Information, Culture and Sports and the Deputy Chief Minister of the Zanzibar Revolutionary Government.

At present, the State University of Zanzibar offers undergraduate programmes of Bachelor of Arts with Education, Bachelor of Science with Education and Bachelor of Computer Science. Others are Diploma in Languages and Education, Diploma in Computer Science and Certificate in Computer Science.
The University is also very well known worldwide for teaching Kiswahili to Foreigners through the Institute of Kiswahili and Foreign Languages (IKFL). It also offers many other short and long term training programmes through the Institute of Continuing Education (ICE), these are those of Tanzania National Certificates of Education, Language Proficiency Courses, CISCO Academy Network Course and Certificate and Associateship Banking Courses.
