Showcasing some of the country’s finest young talent the Kilimanjaro Hotel Kempinski is proud to announce a new initiative; the ‘Kili Art Camp’ which will serve as a platform for budding talent as part of the hotel’s social responsibility efforts.

Following numerous interviews with prospective individuals, six artists were identified and chosen to showcase their talent, in residence, in a week-long event that begins this Sunday, January 31, 2010.

The last quarter of the hotel’s Flame Tree Lounge will be converted into a studio where live painting and sculpting will be held and the artworks exposed to a multi-national audience. We invite members of the public to come to partake in the daily events which include a number of interactive coffee mornings with the artists, activities and workshops for amateurs, and connoisseurs alike.

This celebration of Tanzanian art and culture will culminate on February 5, 2010 in an exclusive invitation-only, cocktail reception in combination with a private silent auction at Level 8. The artists will receive 50 percent of the proceeds for each art piece auctioned and the remaining 50 percent will be donated to the SOS Children’s Villages on behalf of Kempinski Hotel’s in Tanzania. The high-profile affair will end with a magnificent seven-minute fireworks display at 8:15 pm which will be viewed from the roof-top terrace followed by the annual Kempinski Art Ball, a private Black Tie event in the hotel’s Kibo Ballroom.

Mrs. Anne Clarke, wife of the European Union Ambassador to Tanzania has volunteered her skills to this project and has been named the Art Camp’s Chief Patron while renowned artist and mentor to many of Dar es Salaam’s artists, Muzu Sulemanji, has offered his services as Art Curator of the Art Camp. Mr. Sulemanji believes this is a great way to raise funds while helping the community learn more about the talent that is available in Tanzania.

In a meeting held at the hotel, Vice President East Africa, Kempinski Hotels, Sanjiv Malhotra commented on the initiative saying, ‘we are delighted to host the first of many Art Camp’s, which aims to highlight the country’s position as a flourishing centre for the arts in the region and prominently places it on the international art scene”.
