On 16 May 20011, a number of the Tanzania Police (FFU) came under sustained attack by approximately 800 criminal intruders who illegally entered the North Mara mine site and attempted to remove ore from the run of mine (ROM) pad.
The FFU had been called to the area to respond and were set upon by the criminal intruders armed with machetes, rocks and hammers.
According to information received, a number of intruders sustained gunshot wounds, resulting in seven intruder fatalities and twelve injuries.
The police have begun an investigation into the incident. Additional police have been deployed to the area. African Barrick Gold has also initiated an internal company investigation. There have been no material impacts to the operation or production.
Although full details are yet to be confirmed, African Barrick Gold sincerely regrets any loss of life or injury on or near its mine sites.
The company will continue to support the government and the community in their efforts to improve law and order and security in the North Mara region.

How dare you call Tanzanians 'criminal intruders' while you are killing them with chemical waste from your North Mara mine? Shame on you.
ReplyDeleteHow can all 800 community members be crimininals. Do we have such huge gang in Tz. I doubt your information Barrick. You have taken their land that is why they are doing what they are doing due to lack of employment. These were artisernal miners for sure.
ReplyDeleteWho said colonialism is over? 3rd world countries are still under colonialism and its not only the neo-colonialism but the old aggressive one e.g. the west is forcefully after Libya's oil pretty much like they were after ivory, gold e.t.c. in east Africa.
ReplyDeleteI don't have any independent and credible info on North Mara incident but the issue looks like Barrick, just like any other western companies, doesn't care much about the people who traditionally owns the land/resource, thats why they have attacked the mine. Otherwise if they were O.K. they wouldn't have done so, would they?
Bitterly anti-west!
ReplyDeleteWho really benefits from the Gold in there? It's Tanzanian ore, do Tanzanians really benefit or are we being robbed blind? I'm not sure who these intruders were but it sounds like they were not armed except for digging tools. The Government should assess these mine deals and get to the truth behind what really happened.
Mnajisikiaje hivi mkilala?
