Former Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa (pictured) has been appointed member of the newly formed group of Eminent Persons of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) that will review new global economic governance and its implications for Developing countries in a post-crisis era.
The 10-member panel appointed by the UNCTAD Secretary General Supachai Panitchpakdi is compiling a report on the matter which is expected to come out in early next year, the local newspaper Daily News reported on Tuesday.
Mkapa left Dar es Salaam on Monday for Geneva to join other members of the panel in a two-day meeting that begins on Tuesday, according to a statement issued by his office on Monday.
The former Tanzanian president is expected back home on Friday, said the report.
Other members of the panel include President Tarja Kaarina Halonen of Finland, former presidents Thabo Mbeki of South Africa and Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique and Professor Jagdish Bhagwati of Columbia University, it added.
Moreover, First Lady of the Dominican Republic Margarita Cedeno De Fernandez and former UN Deputy Secretary-General and former British Minister for Africa Malloch Brown, Secretary- General of the Centre for the Study of the G20 Long Yongtu of China, creator of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation Mo Ibrahim of Sudan and the Indonesian Minister of Trade Mari Elka Pangestu are also the panel members.
And it will take ages before any other future Tanzanian presidents match Mkapa's caliber and intellectuality. This is the moment, a rare one, for Tanzanians to value and honour OUR OWN. Congratulations Mkapa, you are real and most of us love and miss you in 'that' chair very much!
