With the enthusiasm and dedication of the participants who attended the Tigo Walk for Water 2011- With the support of all the sponsors of the event- With the determination of a few people who believed that they could make a change, and with all the challenges they have faced into achieving this, the Walk for Water 2011 Phase 2 is ready to take-off in Bagamoyo.
The Phase One objective of the Tigo Walk for Water 2011 was to raise awareness of the shortage of water and to get more and more people within the community to be aware of this shortage, save water and to give back as much as they can, via donations and registrations. The objective was achieved by the various media attention the event managed to get and by the turnout of participants at the event.
Phase Two objective of Walk for Water 2011 is to implement the drilling of the boreholes in various areas within Bagamoyo District to provide for clean drinking water to the under privileged villagers.
At the press conference held at The Arcade on 16th August, Ms Bertha Ikua – Client Service Manager for Spearhead Africa Limited announced- “We are pleased to inform all those who supported the Tigo Walk for Water 2011, that we are now starting to drill the boreholes for several community villages around Bagamoyo.
In order to ensure that this project is carried out in a smooth and successful manner we appointed Ifakara Health Institute as our beneficiary partner- given their experience in carrying out similar water initiatives in various parts of Tanzania and their valued presence and contribution in Bagamoyo District.”
“We are also pleased to inform you that Tanzania Distilleries Limited (TDL) along with The Belgian Development Agency (BTC) have come together in a public-private partnership to support the Walk for Water Phase Two.
Contributions from Tigo Walk for Water 2011 and Spearhead Africa Limited along with donations from Tanzania Distilleries Limited and The Belgium Development Agency (BTC) collectively amounted to Tsh 42 million to build 6 boreholes of various depths in Bagamoyo District.
The regions which will benefit from this initiative are: Yombo, Pande, Mbuyuni, Madukani and Makunguni.”
Also speaking during press conference Mr. Joseph Chibehe, TDL Sales manager had this to say „The Walk for Water project appeals to us, as it falls within our corporate social responsibility guidelines and has the sustainability element which is very important for the community.
Water being the key element of our business, we know all too well that many people take for granted the fact that they have access to high-quality and reliable water services. Each day people die from easily preventable water related diseases, children are not the only victims.
Today, thousands of Tanzanian‟s live in areas under water stress, i.e. no access to safe drinking water‟. „We believe in the Walk for Water project and its benefits, our full participation at the event, we engaged our staff in the walk for Water. It was a great feeling to be there, united in one objective to achieve the goal. The event put immense perspective on the distance and hardships village people face to get water- which is a basic right of every human being.
It also threw light on the fact that even children are made to skip school and walk long distances to fetch water- thereby losing out on the basic education.
Donating boreholes to such communities and appointing water village committee to be directly responsible for the boreholes enables sustainability and accountability on the part of the community itself‟ Mr. Chibehe added.
Ms. Pamela Shelukindo - Tigo Representative contributed by saying that “Tigo Tanzania joined forces with Spearhead Africa in supporting Tigo Walk for Water initiative where the event was held at Mlimani City on the 16th of April, 2011. As Tigo, we would like to thank all the people and companies that went their way to support such an important cause of supporting the citizens of Bagamoyo with the water problem.
“Water is a major problem in Africa and indeed in Tanzania and this is the reason why we joined forces with Spearhead Africa. We will continue to work together with Spearhead Africa in this initiative”.
IHI‟s involvement is not only to manage and supervise the construction of the boreholes but to also appoint a Water Village Committee within each region and empower them through training on how to maintain the boreholes to provide sustainable water to the village community. Hence the Water Village Committee will be directly responsible for the boreholes and can be self-sufficient to carry out their daily activities.
The Belgian development agency, BTC, mobilises its resources and its expertise to eliminate poverty in the world. BTC contributes to the efforts of the international community and works towards a society that provides present and future generations with sufficient resources to build a sustainable and fair world.
BTC has already donated 50% of the total budget they have committed to donate towards the construction of the boreholes.
We take this opportunity to encourage more organizations to take a step towards donating funds to build more boreholes within the same project.
