The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Government of the Republic of France signed today a new grant agreement of 500,000 Euros (1.07 Billion Tshs).

The agreement was signed by Mr. Ramadhani Khijjah, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance of the United Republic of Tanzania , H. E Marcel Escure, French Ambassador to Tanzania, and Mr. Yves Terracol, Regional Director of the Agence française de développement (AFD).

This agreement makes available a new Study and Capacity Building Fund thus marking continued support from the Government of France, through Agence Française de Développement (AFD), to the Tanzania Government

The Study and Capacity Building Fund aims at financing feasibility studies of new investment projects that are jointly identified by both Governments for their appraisal and possible financing. In particular, this Study and Capacity Building Fund will target, amongst others, feasibility studies for infrastructure projects in the energy sector, to the benefit of TANESCO, as well as in the transport sector, to the benefit of Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA):

The French Government, through AFD, is a longstanding partner of the Government of Tanzania, and is seeking to extend its support to infrastructure projects in the Water & Sanitation, Energy and Transport sectors.

The Government of France considers Infrastructure as one of the key pillars for sustainable development. It is in this regard that the Government of France is currently financing projects in Tanzania mainly in Water and Sanitation through support to the Water Sector Development Programme (WSDP) and standalone projects in Bukoba and Musoma Municipalities.

The Gvernment f rance is now contemplating supporting several projects in the energy sector, including TANESCO Grid rehabilitation and Upgrade, Provision of credit lines for Renewable and Energy & Energy Efficiency projects, and Tanzania-Kenya Interconnection transmission line.

Other projects that have been supported by the Government of France include budget support for primary and Secondary Education through the Education Sector Development Programme (ESDP) and Construction of the National College of Tourism that was recently inaugurated by H.E the President of the United Republic of Tanzania

The French assistance is in view of supporting Tanzania to attain economic growth and poverty reduction in line with Tanzania’s National Strategy for Growth and Poverty Reduction (MKUKUTA II).
