The African Peer Review
Mechanism (APRM) has confirmed that all is set for Tanzanian President Jakaya
Kikwete to defend Tanzania’s governance records at the APRM Forum of Heads of
States and Government in Addis, Ababa, Ethiopia in January, 2012.
Speaking in Dar es
Salaam on Tuesday during the opening of a two days workshop for Tanzanian
officials on harmonization of APRM program of action with existing national
plans, the Coordinator of the review of Tanzania from APRM Continental
Secretariat based in South Africa, Dr. Rachel Mukamunana said the planned
review of Tanzania is on track.
In July, 2012 in the
margins of the APRM Forum, a congregation of African Union (AU) Heads of States
and Governments participating in the APRM process, the APRM Continental
Secretariat had hinted on the possibility that the Tanzanian President would
face his peers.
“We are finalizing the
Country Review Report and I can assure you that the scheduled peer review of
Tanzania in January, 2012 is on track,” said Dr. Rachel.
The Permanent Secretary
of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr. John
Haule whose Ministry coordinates the APRM process in Tanzania said on behalf of
the government he was pleased on the confirmation and that Tanzania will now
set the necessary preparations.
About 34 African
countries out of 54 are now participating in the APRM-the AU governance
assessment program that seeks to foster accelerated development, promotion of
human rights and good governance among member states.
The scheduled peer
review of Tanzania in January will be followed by a five years period of
implementation and of resolving the governance issues as identified by
Tanzanian stakeholders and the review team that visited the country in March,
2012.
