President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete is expected to officially launch the “Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial Scholarship Fund”, which was established by the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) in 2009 in Arusha next week.

The event will take place during the BoT’s 16th Conference of Financial Institutions (COFI) which starts from 26th to 27th of November 2012, at the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC) whose opening ceremony will also be graced by the presence of Dr. Kikwete.

COFI is a forum that was created in 1980 under the auspices of the Bank of Tanzania. It brings together, every two years, heads of financial institutions, their officials and other stakeholders to exchange views and experiences on matters related to and relevant to the financial system and the country’s economy.

The theme of the 16th Conference is “Financial Innovations and Financial Inclusion in Tanzania”. It aims at highlighting the role of financial innovations in Tanzania in supporting financial inclusion, as well as the regulatory and monetary policy challenges arising thereof.

The BoT Governor Prof. Benno Ndulu said yesterday that, the Fund was championed by the Bank of Tanzania with a view to sponsoring undergraduate students, particularly female students who pursue Mathematics or Science subjects at their Advanced Secondary Education Level, and passed with an outstanding performance to pursue first degrees in the related fields in Tanzanian Universities.

In addition, the Governor said the Fund will also sponsor both female and male students in the fields of Economics, Information Technology, Accountings and Finance to pursue first degrees in Tanzanian niversities.
The Fund was established on 12th October 2009 in commemoration of the Late Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, the Father of the Nation and an international icon.

  2. This is good idea however, students with good performance in primary and secondary schools are likely to belong to few capable individuals in the country. They always come from good and expensive schools. If the criteria is only good performance, implementation of this idea will mean giving sponsorship to students from "high class" Tafakari
