Azania Bank donates 5m/- to support 2013 Breast Cancer Campaign

AZANIA Bank Limited has donated 5 million shillings to Agha Khan Health Services that will help boost this year’s breast cancer awareness drive in a bid to create public awareness on the fatal disease.

Speaking during a handover ceremony at the bank's headquarters in Dar es Salaam, Azania Bank Director in the Managing Director's office (Treasury Management and Business Development) Godwin Seiya, said the bank is committed to support various social programs as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and in the course of giving back a certain percentage of the Bank earnings to the society they work with.

Mr. Seiya noted that his bank has decided to support the campaign to sensitize women and the public in general to make routine tests at least once a year, with the view of minimizing risks for many women who are potential future victims.  "Records indicate that up to 1.5 million women have breast cancer problems. Tanzania accounts for 1,307 of the breast cancer victims. We at Azania Bank believe that the only way to minimize the risk is through public sensitization.

"We believe with proper information dissemination, victims of breast cancer   can seek early medication thus increasing their chances of living. We are today donating five million shillings to support this year’s Breast Cancer awareness campaign," he said. The Aghakhan Hospital Medical Director Dr. Jaffer Dharsee during the event said the campaign targets to screen up to 5000 women throughout the country this year.

He said last year’s campaign that was held in Dar es Salaam, Mtwara, Dodoma and Lindi cost upto $ 100,000 (Tsh 160m) and reached 3000 women in the four regions. “We will continue with the campaign this year and our target is screening 5000 women across the country this year. We will also bring on board cervical cancer screening this year. We call upon various corporate companies to render support to the campaign,” he said.

  1. I congratulate and salute Azania Bank Ltd for being in for front to support cancer initiatives in Tanzania. Cancer is currently a number one killer in Tanzania. Each days, out of the 10% who turn to hospital, 100 people die of cancer. Cancer kills more people than Malaria, TB and HIV/AIDS. There is an urgency for educating people on cancer and conducting testings/screening as the earlier cancer is detected it can be cured.I call upon other banks to think support cancer initiatives as Azania Bank Ltd is doing. Azania Bank Ltd, on the fight against cancer I tell you ALUTA CONTINUA! You are doing the right thing for the people. (Dr. Kandusi, prostate cancer survivor)
