Tanzania is
one of the poorest in terms of income per capita despite the fact that, it is
one of the world’s richest when it come to natural resources. It is in fact the
third richest in the entire continent behind South Africa and Democratic
Republic of Congo.
Despite Tanzania’s massive potential and endless opportunities, the country remains arguably donor dependant, with its people living on the edge of poverty. Many theories and myths have been out there for quite some-time why Tanzanians are so poor. The fact of the matter is that, we Tanzanians are poor because we are lazy. We like easy ways out of our hardships. Our culture and educational systems, cultivates our minds to seek shortcuts out of our difficulties. We do not engage in realistic sense of determining cause and effect of issues affecting our lives and society.
We are economically poor as a country because of our long dependence on foreign handouts, which have in turn have enslaved our minds through a sense of entitlement. Despite their wealth, many African countries have made it a routine for Washington and London to subsidize their budgets. We are remaining economically disadvantaged because of an enemy called corruption; a product of greed and selfishness. Tanzania lacks people with patriotic-sense
One would think that, with its strategic geographic location and access to the Indian Ocean, Tanzania would be an economic power. Others think that with its vast arable land and water sources, Tanzania would never experience food shortage. With its national parks, and other historical treasure, Tanzania would be a Mecca of world tourism and Africa’s economic power. We are dead wrong. Tanzania poverty paradox is potential to become an economic power is slowly slipping away and the poverty paradox
Majority of Tanzanians do not have access to quality education required to open up their minds into knowledge base, and equip them with opportunities to explore, and discover other endless possibilities necessary to create jobs and put people to work. Inaccessibility to quality education is creating a cyclic-generational poverty among millions of Tanzanians, which further complicates the untangling of the poverty paradox
Foreigners have realized that our leaders and intellectuals are mis-educated, and are therefore handing us candy-bars at will in exchange for our resources. They are exploiting the cracks within our poor education, culture of laziness and greed, and lack of patriotism within our leadership structure to strip us of our natural wealth.
Foreigners have discovered that the mis-educated Tanzania’s colonialists are more interested in nourishing their Swiss-bank accounts, than dealing with the plight of poverty that has engulfed the country. This is the reason Tanzania is poor and will continue to be poor
Tanzania is getting poorer because we are not receptive of new revolutionary- minds that would foster economic progress. The system wide kleptocrats are not welcoming of new revolutionary brain-power. Their ineptness makes them feel vulnerable and threatened, because they are products of a culture that lacks work discipline. Dr. Ferdinand Masau of Tanzania Heart Institute (THI), is the sad and tragic case of how far Tanzania has to go to accept a wave of new minds that will change the country and its resources into a trillion dollar economy
Notwithstanding, we must realize that corruption has created a sense of entitlement to the rulers across Africa, as opposed to a set of leaders that needs to prioritize their country’s needs. These rulers are in high gear pursuing their financial security. Tanzania must welcome and nurture alternative and creative ideas –human capital- of its own people scattered around the globe to fully utilize its resources for the better good of her people. Her cultural perspective and educational system must be overhauled to align with the evolving global economic fundamentals

ReplyDeleteI am one of the individuals who have been supporting Mashaka's point of views. Waswahili wanasema ngoma ikisifia upasuka, this time around, Mashaka is presenting bullshit, the same old Eurocentric claims about Africans, though Mashaka specifically use them to put all Tanzanians into ill-conceived and over-simplified category as lazy people. Mashaka's claims once again have exposed your naivety and an agent of wallstreet economical criminals. Why is USA broke? She borrows heavily from China, Japan and Korea. Why poverty is a reality today in many EU countries? Why over 50 millions Americans live in abject poverty, the figure laerger than Tanzanian population? Why USA's foreign debt is over 16 trillions more than her GDP? I personally advise you Mashaka to stop being used by American war mashinery and economical criminals who have employed you at the wallstreet bankers and financial institutuions. Do you know that through WTO rules and regulations imposed on African countries over several decades have contributed to destroy and impoverish rural farmers in Africa? USA and European farmers are protected by WTO at the expense of African rural farmers? Have ever been to African villages to see how rural farmers work hard to make ends meet? It is true in Urban areas where there are small percentage of elites, politicians and jobless youths some may resort to shortcut but this is true to many countries I know around the world. The fact of the matter is over 80% of Tanzanians live in rural areas and work very hard as opposed to Mashaka's baseless claims which seek to reinforce the same western conventional stereotypes about Africans and Tanzanians in particular. Mashaka go back to school to unlearn the misinformation and miseducation and come to me to re-learn real knowledge of why Tanzania is depicted as poor. I give you 7 days to withdraw your bullshit and baseless claims, leave Tanzanians alone, you are one of the most unpatriotic Tanzanian and African I know so far. You don't have moral authority to talk of patrioticism. USA is broke, you have no choice but to come back to your mother land but you owe all Tanzanians an apology.
ReplyDeleteDear John Mashaka
ReplyDeleteOnce a little kitten looked in what she thought was a mirror, but was in fact a framed picture of a lion, and thought, I must be bigger and frightening than I thought of myself. Before you rubbish Tanzanians, look in the mirror and make sure it is a mirror.
ReplyDeleteKuendelea kujifariji kwa kujaribu kujilinganisha na economic woos US and EU ni kukosa ubunifu ukizingatia wao tayari wamechukua hatua to restructure their economies!
Tanzania is broke because we do not have leaders with the same vision like Mwl. Nyerere...we do not want to be self reliant...we do not want to manufacture..goods and services from raw materials for our consumptions...we do not have any vision or desire to improve our standards of living by our owns means, we do not know how to mobilise the our resources...we rely on importing goods & services...we import by using the foreign currency..that we get most of it from grants etc....
ReplyDeleteWithout building a culture of manufacturing goods from raw materials(Natural resources) we cannot get out of this vicious cycle...
Just look on the project to construct pipe from Mtwara to Dar...you will find that the pipes are imported...it means most of the loan money we got from china will go back
Why dont we find a way of mining our Iron (We have iron in Tanzania), manufacture the pipes in Tanzania and then use them for the project with this its means we will have more output from the project ie Mining industry, Pipe Manufacturing Plant etc...with this we can be sure that the Pipe manufacturing plant will continue to produce pipes (once mtwara project is over) that are now imported in the country....
There are a lot of items that nowadays are imported from China, but can be manufactured easily from within...the government was supposed to find a way of promoting and ensuring indigenous people (capable people not politician)...can get fund and establish various manufacturing plants...
ReplyDeleteEveryday people/government officials are complaining that there is shortage of employment opportunities...we need to create them...jobs cannot happen from nowhere...
Nowadays Brazil..is a developed countries..if you go back to its history you will see they had strick policy on importation but we Tanzania we import everything...and the bad thing sometimes even the government tax is not collected from the imported items because of corruptions!!
Currently the government is using all its effort to promote foreign investors(I think it believes foreigners will develop this country!!)...but rememember for a country to be sovereign..its people must also own a significant part of the economy...so we need to be careful!!
The current situation of the country...I think only the poor farmers are the one that do a job that adds value because the create...food from the seeds...also most of the foreign currency is coming from the export of raw materials...
Nowadays...in the government..institutions..even some furniture & fittings are imported..it means we use our foreign currency but also we cause our carpenters to lack jobs but also not aspire to be more creative..bse they dont have work...
In summary we need to learn and build the ability to manufacture our own goods and services from scratch! ie from raw materials and natural resources...
The problems that faces Tanzania populations is dislike of reading...nowadays you can easily learn why other economies are developing...Look at India...you will find that importation is greatly discouraged!
ReplyDeleteWe are very poor in planning and abstract thinking..look at the number of small project of power generation that were listed by the minister...why dont we have few projects but big one?...
We need to build our country...It cannot happen by wishful thinking...foreigner can assist ...but cannot do it for us while we are sleeping or making irrelevant decisions that are opposing real development
just read the article below...to see how other decide to build their countries...we need to wake up and read...If possible our member of parliamnets should also be given task may be of reading four books per year on how other countries develop...I think this can enlighten them to know more on what to say..and contribute positive to the country development...bse you may be a person desiring to see Tanzania developed but you do not know how it can happen....

whether you agree with the author or not we need such debates. It is good and progressive to understand how we can tackle abject poverty
