The one day Nile Basin Imitative meeting kicked off yesterday at Ubungo Maji aimed at forging more relations on implementation of NBI projects among member States.

Opening the meeting, Deputy Permanent Secretary Ministry of Water, Eng. Mbogo Futakamba insisted the Nile Basin Initiative Coordination meeting to look on the best ways NBI can implement projects more successful He acknowledged the importance of the meeting as it gives opportunity for our country to exchange information, reports on the implementation of the projects among member states.

“Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) should be our priority because of the challenges facing the program. Challenges like water pollution, climate change, environmental destruction and decrease of water levels in lakes and rivers should be addressed more seriously with all stakeholders” he said.

The meeting was aimed at disseminating progress report on NBI projects at regional level.

Tanzania as member of NBI has number projects under umbrella of NBI including NEL Power interconnection between Kenya and Tanzania, Iringa-Mbeya transmission line project, Russumo Falls project and Sustainable development of Mara river Basin project. Participants agreed in principle for the need of frequent consultations, sharing of information among member states and comprehensive sustainability strategy for all projects.

The meeting was attended by members from the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Minerals, TANESCO, and the host, Ministry of Water.

Was this resolved? To make things even more complicated, in 2010? Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda — signed a treaty declaring their rights to a share of the river’s flow.
